Question on Salinity

I was reading other threads and notice someone mentioned that most people keep their "reef" tanks with a higher salinity then I am.
I have no corals, ect. At the momment I just have a damsel and banded shrimp, and mine is at 1.023 (also, temp stays between 78-79). Is this going to be an issue if I don't plan on getting corals? Or should I raise it?

The Shrimp will appreciate full strength salinity. That's 35ppt - 37ppt for most tropical reefs. Or a Specific Gravity of 1.026 - 1.029 at 80F.
Before making any adjustments you should verify that your measuring instrument is accurate. Also, make any adjustment slowly.

Hmm... Ok. When my friend was showing me how to do all the water test, ect. she said to keep the salinity in the good range marked on the hydrometer (yes, I know... I'm going to try and invest in the other kind but the pocket book isn't up for that just yet) and it has marked good as anything from 1.020- 1.024. However, ya'll suggest it actually stay higher then that??

I can only speak for me. I recommend keeping salinity close to the animals natural environment. That can be lower or higher depending on what animals you are keeping.

I keep my water at 1.025 to match the LFS's tanks. It might be a crazy reason to do so, but natureal seawater is also 1.025.

Natural seawater density varies from a S.G. of 1.020 up to 1.029.
and the methane componet of earth's atmosephere is about 10%, unless you fart, then in that particular spot is 25%. Or over a cow pasture after someone gave all the cows Milwaukee's Best, then its like 50%. Geeze, do we all have to be more exact than others?

Red sea 1.0299
East coast Africa 1.0237-1.0260
Sir Lanka 1.0222-1.0252
Singapore 1.0222-1.0237
Caribbean Sea 1.0260
Florida 1.0252-1.0260
Philippines 1.0222-1.0252
Sea of Java 1.0237
