Lol, yes i know your post is lod, and hes a bit bigger than in that last shot, and a slightly darker green, but he is in no way big, no longer than my pinkie. Hes grown larger, and is torturing ,my astraeas, and giant nassarius. Davo, is also far more interactive, his favorite actuivity is trying for hrs to fruitlessly steal a hunk of shrimp froma coral. Up dates near christmas.

And ntm the main component of glue we look for, cyanoacrylate is toxic.

*S* yes it is toxic.... but in this application only if it leaches or becomes soluble in water. once it contacts water its skins (surface cures) so in effect its non toxic by the nature of the glue its toxicity is limited by its application. you could swallow a gallon of the stuff, you wouldnt die from toxicity. if it didnt glue you shut you would poo solid cured cyanoacrylate glue. you would be more likly to die from blockage or sealing. *S* . you could dump a 5g bucket of it (cyanoacrylate glue) in your tank all it would do is skin over and displace water. it wouldnt poison anything. like all good scientests know there are no toxic elements, only toxic amounts.
thats the beauty of cyanoacrylate glue its incabable of leaching quantifiable amounts of toxins into your tank, while it may be "toxic" its the inability of it to become soluble in the environment its used in. kind of like silica dust.. airborn it can cause silicosis of the lungs in humans, underwater its completly inert (unless you aspirate water with suspended silica dust). *S* isnt science fun.
great mantis thread by the way. I really want one but the girlfriend still says no...

Why not for god sakes theyre not that bad! for the first couple days you freak out cause u think theres a mantis in ur tank (and there is) tehn u get used to teh tapping, and they dont do it all night, usually for just teh first half hr. ALSO theyre very interactive, my mom hated the idea, but she really likes Davo now, though hes rather secretive. Oh yeah and lesson for ya, when and if u get one, keep a SHARP eye on his burrow when ur hand is in teh tank. I failed to do that for 5 seconds, and BAM cracked thumbnail, and a fractured bone in my thumb, my lesson is: Use tongs no matter how frustrating!
One last not, teh first time he "love taps" teh glass dont fall out of your bed screaming about water.... :p And yes science is fun, look up ferrofluid. I also had some fun with thermite recently. VERY dangerous, and exceedingly cool.

I am once again stating this, if you have any small, unwanted crabs, shrimp, even mantises, post them here. Not only does Davo like the company, but I am also cataloging his behavior, as well as behaviors of various other crabs. This is for an extra project for me for AP bio.

Hmm this is definately a possibility. I wouldnt mind getting a small 10g mantis tank for the down stairs (the family room and kitchen are one big room) so it might look nice. Ideas ideas. Out of curiosity, around how much did your mantis cost you?
My dad had one before we moved in his 55g as a hitchhiker. He was so shy and never stuck his head out, maybe about 5" long too. At night you could hear the clicks a few times an hour. Only thing he ever got for food was our snails and a damsel or two ever.

Not sure if you are aware, but the "clicks" you hear from a Mantis are not actually noises he creates per say. What you hear is the sound of the impact of him striking. The noise is of course relative to what he is hitting.
I have a 6 inch Odontacyllus Scylarrus. When he strikes a snail or the side of his tank, you can hear him from across the house.

Davo is secretive, but not without cause, the LFS i found him in thought he was a curiosity, tortured the poor guy (figuratively)
You can order a N. wenneare from Tampa Bay Saltwater, its expensive, but they're wild, healthy, and not tortured. If you look here , you can find something that suites you but I recommend either Gonodactylus Smithii or Neogonodactylus Wennerae, they're active and personable.
Also something to remember, ever week and a half or so you need to buy a snail or hermit, preferable a small nassarius, like the ones that previously occupied those destroyed shells, otherwise the mantis may get atrophy in his raptorials.
And another thing to note, the meral spot is a spot on the inside of each arm. (not INSIDE, but on the inner side) it is very noticeable, this is usually what will secure your ID.
Also, go to reef central, go to the mantis shrimpo forum and read the molting sticky this is very important.
do you really get to see him a whole lot?
no I dont see him alot because im at school, so hes used to not having me around, but hes way better than before, he wouldnt even eat if you were there.
Definetly fun to watch, especially their problem solving skills, try placing a piece of krill underneath a half clamshell, but leave it poking out, and watch them try to get it.

Heres another one, shows you the true power of these things. LINCKIA
I had the preivelege to watch Davo pwn a crab when he was introduced, poor crab has no claws and 3 legs now. It was especailly cool due to the crabs insistence that it remain in its 2nd story apartment which davo now occupies.
Basically I came home to hear click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click- pause-click-click-click-click-click-click-click- lol, it was great. Im trying to find him something interesting to tackle.
Also look at this one, the sound efects suck, but the threat display is epic, i got one of those from Davo teh other day Clicky
