Well, I don't think I could ever "get rid" of my snakes. But since the oldest recorded ball is 48, they may outlive me!
You must be involved with a rescue org to be getting a vet's snake?

Actually, the guys dad cold called me, last week. I guess he'd seen, on a reptile forum I'm on, that I was a vet and had big snakes. Guy got my number, some how and just called me up.
His son lost both arms and a leg...6 months later, he's still in the hospital, undergoing surgeries. His dad offered to have the Retic shipped to me, but I told him I'm sure they have enough to worry about, so I took care of it.

Yep, definitely want to see pics of this special big guy after he gets home and settles in.
I didn't know you were a vet. Are your patients mostly herps, or do see hairy four-legged types as well? When I was living in the Keys, my snakes' vet was Doug Mader. He is somewhat known as an herp vet, and has published. Have you ever heard of him?
If you can share the herp forum with me, please PM.

I expect full pictures sir.
I'm hoping for a Saturday ship date.
Came home, last night, and found out that someone had broken into my house. The dog kept them from going to the main floor, but they got into my snake room, in the basement. All snakes were accounted for and no one looked injured. There were plants thrown around and broken, they messed with Brutus and moved some stuff around...but didn't take anything. It was kind of wierd. The last thing I need is someone breaking in, messing with my Cobras and getting bitten.
And Beth, I sent you a PM.

Yeah. Playing with it doesnt make you look cool. Im not hating but that isnt worth one second of feeling manly. The damage that snake can do with a bite. Screw that. Gorgeous snake. Put it away

Sounds like its time for a home alarm system.
When I was broken in to a couple of years ago, I noted the TV gone as soon as I got home. I raced to my snakes to make sure they were ok. The cops said I should have left the house as soon as I realized there was a burglary, but there is no way I could have done that not knowing about my pets.
They did steal my balls' tote bag too. What low-lives. I was always afraid they'd come back and take my snakes. Not that they are worth much money, but some people will break in just to get the change in your change jar (this happened to a neighbor a couple of weeks ago).

Thanks for the warning....
Haha I don't do it for fun, I rescue most of these animals. This snake was seriously dehydrated and skinny when I got him, he was having trouble shedding so I had to help get his skin off to avoid any complications. It is impossible to do this in the tank so he had to come out so I could handle him.
I have a seperate guest house where my reps stay, I have 18 years handling exp. and a biology major. I don't rescue much anymore since moving. But some such as this guy I could not and would not find a home for.
I don't do this just for fun.

Now here is an example of poor judgement....
I got a call from animal control about 5 years ago. They said someone had an alligator in their backyard. I go over to the house later that week, and I couldn't believe my eyes. There was a 9 foot Nile Crocodile this guy OWNED for 7 years. He actually had taken very good care of it but I can't believe anyone would own those to show off, it was in a custom built enclosure next to this guys pool. He was obviously very wealthy and thought he could have whatever he wanted.
Well to make a long story short he could not find a place that would take it and animal control could not handle it, he had gotten drugs from the vet to put him down. This was such a beautiful animal I couldn't leave knowing he was going to do that. So later that week some other people that helped me rescue we all went over there and got him and brought him to my 150 acre estate. I had to keep him in a trailer while I had a fence built around a pond for him.
IT TOOK ME A YEAR to find a worthy place to adopt him and I trailered him on my dime down to Louisana to have a happy healthy life.

reefaholic33, that is an awesome story!
Thank goodness for folks like you and AW2 who are willing to do so much for these animals.
You have to ask yourself, where does one acquire a nile croc?

Go to kingsnake.com it's acutally not hard! And most of the dumb people who breed them will ship them to anyone even without seeing a permit! Although the last couple of years they seem to be cracking down on it.
Thanks for the kind words I try to do what I can and I get a great deal of pride out of animals most people would leave for dead.

That is a pretty cool room. I think you posted it before awhile back? How many hrs per week do you spend keeping things clean and nice looking? The habitats look well kept.
I have been looking for a nice size heavy branch for my snakes' enclosure. Did you find that one in the dragon's tank outdoors or at a store?

Hey thanks. Ya i did post it a while back. I'd say it only takes me around an hour a day for everyone. (plus the fish tanks) I have it down to a pretty simple schedule.
I bought the large log on the right of the tank at a reptile expo. Got it for 15$ which was lucky. The other piece i just found in the woods and stuck in the oven for a while to make sure it was clean.

Nice Cobra, reefaholic. Is that a Monocle or an Asiatic?
And, nothing wrong with handling them, as long as you know what you're doing. I have full intentions of handling mine, when they are bigger...but at 28" - 30" long, right now, they're way too quick and there's not alot of them to hold on to. lol
And Beth...my intruder wasn't really an intruder, at all.
The next night, after the "break in", I was laying in bed and woke up around 4am and heard a loud crash downstairs. I run into the basement, in underwear and flip flops, kick open the snake room door and was ready to kung fu chop the first person I saw.
The first thing I saw was Brutus, stretched out, across the entire floor, hissing at me. lol
Seems that with breeding season just starting and my big females cage right next to his, he wanted some action. He had pushed the back corner of his enclosure off...and we're not talking about some flimsy enclosure...3/4" plywood, held together with deck screws.
Luckily, he doesn't mind being handled and I got him back into his enclosure. But, he was definately the culprit, from the other night. By the time I'd come home, the other night, I'm assuming he'd gotten cold and climbed back into his enclosure, same way he got out and I didn't notice the cage damage. Plants were knocked over again, etc. He was just out for a stroll. The next morning, I permanetely fixed his enclosure, so he's definately not getting out again.
It was an eventful early morning, to say the least. I wish I would've thought to take pics.

Hey AW2x3... he's a monocle. And yeah I handle him when he needs it, feeding time I take him out of his cage so he doesn't associate food in his cage. When he is out of the cage IMO cobras are one of the easier hot snakes to handle. Except like you said when they are that small, there is no way to tail them.
Glad your break in turned out to be ok!

Poor Brutus. You're torturing him with proximity, but not allowing him to meet the call of nature.
