Lookin good, I wonder how you tell the --- of these fish. I've always wondered how nice it would be to have 2 as a pair.

supposedly you are suppose to tell the male because they have a longer dorsal fin but I think you would need to look at two side by side to tell. I also hope to someday get a mate for mine but that will be once I get my dream tank...

I was just looking at a website for one of the local fish stores and I read something that I find disturbing. The website had some sort of classification A,B,C to say how hard a fish would be to take care of. I was looking over the list and they classified a scooter blenny as a class A fish which is supposedly the easiest to take care of class of fish. Then as I scrolled down they put percula clowns in as class B fish. I wonder how many people take home a cute little scooter blenny after hearing it is easy to care for only to have to starve to death. Poor little guys.....

Wow, those are some nice looking reds on your scooter. I've never seen one look quite like that. Is he considered a red scooter dragonnet? He doesn't look red all over like the one pictured on this site...
Oh, and Mr_Bill, I think our scooters are male based on the size and coloration of the dorsal fin.

There are many variations to the color and the look of them. That is a female..notice the shorter dorsal. I have'nt gotten any good pics of my male yet.
She is a Synchiropus stellatus aka red scooter blenny aka scooter dragonet {really not a blenny at all}

Yup, I figured yours was female. I knew the males had much larger dorsal fins but I had never seen a picture of a female with her fin up to compare to. It looks like it is pretty obvious. Hopefully someday when I have a bigger tank I can get a female too.
I kind of like the blue coloration around the eyes of Mr_Bill's and mine but the bright red looks awesome too...

I'm thinking that might be a male only trait as well. I've had my eye on another scooter at the LFS which has a short dorsal but is missing the blue dots on face like ours.
FOOD ALERT!!
Just tried some prawn eggs and my scooter flips over it. Absolutely loves the stuff, so if you find some frozen prawn eggs at your LFS give it a try.

I time my scooter between scoots when I take his picture.. On my digital camera I press the button halfway and wait until he stops for a second and then it captures the picture immediately before he can scoot away.

Someday when I get a huge tank I would like to get a second scooter. I have read that as long as they are 1 male and 1 female they will get along fine. I also read somewhere that you can keep multiple females with one male. Anyone know if this is true? Also, has anyone had long term success keeping multiple scooters?

I have a 44 pentagon that has been going for a month. I quick cycled with 60 lbs cured LR and 40 LBS LS and pre-cycled water. The fuge has a lot of caluerpa and other grass from another tank with alot of pods. Can I sustain a scooter or should I wait. I newbie murdered one by starvation and my wife almost left me. She wants another. I will search for frozen prawn? eggs. Can I save my marriage and get another or wait a year for the 92g to mature?

Well I would wait more just to make sure the pods have gotten a foot hold but with a fuge and growing macro algae you should be fine for one of these magnificent creatures....

JHunter, My wife loves you! No one else needs to respond! I will just make sure it takes me a month to find one we like!

P.S. Who eats more pods? A SB or Madrin?

I agree, two dragonettes of the same size should eat the same amount. I think the difference would be, scooters will accept frozen foods more often so would eat slightly less pods.

I don't know how they do it. My pictures never turn out as nice. I end up taking about 10 pictures for every one I keep and even then they aren't as nice. I should just blame it on my camera..... Well here are two more of my scooter since I am bored...
I'm getting rather irritated by the dirty sand and the hair algae on my rocks. I am open to suggestions about how to clean it up...
