Could you mail that house to California please!
That house in CA would be 1/2 the square footage, an undersized garage, basement (NOT happening), and average cost in the neighborhood about $600,000.

I wasn't referring to the quality, but rather the cost of living / bang for your buck. CA is so out touch with the rest of the country that it's rediculous.

I am part owner of a house in Orange County. Lot is half the size of what I have here in the Denver area, 3 bedrooms one bath with family room and one car garage as opposed to 3 bedrooms 2 baths family room and dining room plus 1000 sq unfinished basement with laundry room and bedroom. Difference is the house in California is in a semi crappy neighborhood and if the termites ever quite holding hands it will fall down and would sell for twice what my Denver house would sell for.
I spent better that 30 years in Cal, I mean it could be worse, you could be living in Texas but to me the cost of living just wasn't worth it. Trouble is it's damn hard to be in the position to pull up stakes and move out even if you wanted to.
Basically YOU'RE TRAPPED!!!!

LOL, thought you'd seize on that. If you offered me Texas or Cal in this day and age there is no doubt where I'd go. about 25 years ago I was in a bar when some cowboy looking expatriated Texan puke started in about Texas was so great and being God's country to which I replied "So's the county dump and I bet he isn't bragging about that either". The boy got all hostile on me, Until I stood up (I go a little better than 6'5") then he dicided to finish his beer.
I did buy the next round for him and his girl. Didn't want to make him look too bad in front of his woman.

another major consideration is altho Renee can pretty much work anywhere, i need to be in an area where there is some kind of microelectronics industry (aerospace, device mfg, etc.). there's lots of that here in So. CA. then again, if i could make the same money flipping burgers or working in an LFS...

I dunno, texas has some major microelectronics players too, dell, TI, HP, and the list goes on...

If I could pick a place to live right now it would be northern Arizona. Montana is great but there aren't any jobs and with their screwed up political system I don't see it getting any better any time soon.
The Denver area is good, just not right in Denver. They have driven out a few good companies in the short time I have lived here. If we could turn the eastern plains into a beach this would be a perfect spot

Chitown DOES have Motorola and a few other Compaines like that still. Also Square D that is were my Cousin a Electrical Engineer works makes over 80K a year for them. Do not forget Cat or John Deere for Electronics also. Heck the Fram equipment and Construction equipment now adays has more computers on them than a freaking Space Shuttle.

If I was going to move back to Texas, I would only go to Corpus.
The humidity and heat would take Greg down.
The houses are expensive, yes. But it's the downpayment that is a problem for a lot of people. 20% is ALOT of free cash when you are talking about the houses in our area. BUT, monthly m.ortgage is not a problem because our wages are considerably higher. Nurses do not make 6 digits in Texas (nor do they need to). My standard of living is the same as it was in Corpus. I make more here and things cost more here. At the end of the day it's all about having enough left over to get the stuff you want with hopefully some to put away.

i don't really do commercial microelectronics, altho we get a few parts from TI. I work on these things at the component level, i'm not a designer or even a systems person. I have standing offers at some companies in the DFW area, but they haven't been able to talk me into moving to TX, nor have they thrown enuff money my way to make me rethink it. i MIGHT go "hmmmm..." if they were to offer me a failure analysis lab position AND money...
now Austin might be nice...lots of music there. i wonder if anyone needs a good horn player...
