Slow Build 55 Gallon

Ok..... So I am at a loss..... I am losing the whole alk, calc, mag war...... I attack my alk because thats the first one thats out of whack (5dkh), got it to 8.3.... didn't think to check mag at the time. Check calcium and its originally at 420 but after dosing my alk it went to 340, I understand that translation. Now I finally get the wise idea to check mag. Its at 1050. So I do what I think is bringing it up, Seachem advantage Mag, and have dosed my tank 10 teaspoons a day (46 gallons of actual water) for 2 weeks and got my pramaters checked yesterday again..... Alk 7.8, Calc 540 (I would of thought it shot up because of increased Mag holding it in, cause I haven't dosed it as hard as when I was trying to raise it, as I knew higher Mag would raise the calc) and mag was STILL AT 1050....... CAN THIS BE SO? Even dosing my ligtly coraled tank so heavy with mag? I want to believe the worker didn't do the mag test right. I can't afford the test to do it my self, and they use the Elos test (suppose to be good tests).
So I ask those who have dealt with MAG/ALK/CALC for a while, does this sound right? This is why I asked if my Red Mangroves could be sucking up the MAG....

Elos are indeed supposed to be good test jerth! Im not that expierenced with the whole scene yet but well testing mine...if the cal is between 400-500 and ur dkh is between 8-10 more so 10 than 8...ur mag should be in check. Wats ur coral like? Any sps or lps? Hmmm that is odd! Do they do it in front of u or take it back and do the test? I dont trust no one with my water! LOL

I trust my LFS employee and he does it infront of me, but its a long test and I have never personally done it my self, so IDK if its being done right. I worry that its being done wrong and I over dose my tank with Mag ya know? According to the SeaChem advantage mag, a does of 10 teaspoons is suppose to raise my mag 25..... That is why I did it for 2 weeks and took it back to them to see if I was close to the 1350 range.....
6 small frags of SPS
1 med hammer wall coral
3 other small frags LPS (acan, chalice, bowerbanki)
So not loaded at all......

No Mag/Alk/Calc experts swimming today? Or at least knowledge of a good article that I can piece my own knowledge together?

Well I never had a black tube, I had a pink one (store said orange) first, mine was fed shrimp so it wasn't a filter feeder. It stung and ate my lawnmower blenny, a couple of cleaner shrimps and stung to death but not eat my copperbanded butterfly fish.
It was the most beautiful thing in the tank....It did not eat my fish and shrimp until it reached the size of a dinner plate full bloomed
I do my own water test, no the LFSs have a habbit of not following exact directions, they will add two or three drops to hurry up and it changes the results. I got a mag test from Seachem, I do my water changes, and to date have never dosed for magnesium....I use Instant Ocean reef crystals, my mag is 1350, I just checked it the other day.

I went and talked to the LFS owner, about adding 1 bottle of AquaVitro Ions 11.8 oz and 600g of seachem reef advantage Mag since June 18 in my 55 and their test had said that my mag was still 1050. He said there had to have been something wrong with the test, so he had me bring in the water sample again and he wanted to try the mag test. His on hand opened Elos ran out of part A, so he poped open a RedSea test for me, and tested it...... WELL my mag was 1700....... About where I thought it would be, but the test never would read over 1050. 1 bad test later and two bottles of mag, I have a mag level of 1700, they told me that's a fine level, and they bet I didn't have any algae problems..... and I don't.

No red mangrove sucking..... it was Elos test that sucked. Our belief was that that it was an old test

Are you kidding me?? I have been struggling to get my Mag above 1050-1100 for weeks now. I of course use the Elos test. Time to run out and get a different test kit. Thank you for the information.

Yep same exact thing with me, I added that bottle of Aquavitro ions 11.8oz and the Seachem advantage mag 600g in those 3 weeks, and tested it 4 times during that period. First rating was 1050 second 1150, thrid 1050, fourth NO GO. Got the redsea one to test it and it was out the 1600. Those were weekly checks as I was dosing slower, using this calculator: http://reef.diesyst.com/chemcalc/chemcalc.html
Those Elos tests could of had a bad batch. I'm not sold on them, and there is like 6 steps....... too many......

Comment, every one else has
But it was a save from a 30 gallon tank, that someone was misguided into. I really didn't want to justify any of this to anyone, but you made me laugh. I only feed the maintenance amount, not over feed for growth of my fish. I enjoy the longevity of them, not pride my self on size. All my fish are happy (to include the yellow tang.... he had tattered fins and signs of lateral line disease.... BUT SHOWS NO MORE SIGNS OF PROBLEMS.) Also we hear this ohh too often on this and other boards(With no results), I will be upgrading my tank to a 90/110 which ever I find a good deal on by the end of the year (another reason there hasn't been many corals added like my 24g). So I do have plans to give him room to accommodate his growth. I have been on here long enough and have taken the time to learn, so it wasn't done with out knowledge of what I was doing.
Now.... that I have had to justify.....

I really would like to hear your comments! This is mainly for my progress, but others have wonderful insight, hence the popularity of such sites (THAT I have been apart of since Jan. 06)
, and I enjoy hearing it!
Wednesday!!!
