Smoking ban in public places

But that is the market. I think Darth's point is that the consumer can demand this. If there is no demand for a smoke free place, then there will not be one. The market can resolve some of these issues, and I prefer that over passing laws, personally. People need to speak up.
What irks me THE MOST about the smoking thing is that it is LEGAL yet not legal. We are keeping politicians in business on the one hand getting money from cigarette and alcohol taxes for all sorts of causes, but then passing laws on when and where you can do it, who can do it, etc etc and making a huge and powerful lobby out of the industry at the same time.
Grow a pair - ban it outright if it is so terrible. The people who would really be impacted would be kids in smokers homes, not people eating in a restaurant. But there is A LOT Of money in it for politico's...so I don't see that coming. Mostly these issues annoy me because of the politicians, who are people (in either party) that I don't care for.

Most I encountered had smoke free AREAS however, which is what I believe Darth said.

But like KerriAnn said (and I about died when I read it) non-smoking areas are like no peeing areas in a swimming pool. They are (or thank God, in Florda were) a joke. You could still smell it or had to walk through it to get to the restroom. It's like some of the Themeparks. Disney World has designated smoking sections and you always know when you are walking by one. But there is always the 40 something year old lady walking by that looks like she is 80 from smoking 2 packs a day for 20 years and sounds like a frog with a sore throat yelling "Get over here before I beat your azz" to her 7 stair step kids that is just totally disregarding this and doing as she pleases. Now before anyone jumps to conclusions and interprets this as me thinking all smokers are white trash, that is not what I'm saying at all. I am only referring to those that smoke where they shouldn't and don't care. If you are this type of person, then maybe the shoe fits.
Now what used to be halarious was the "smoking aquariums" in the airports. You couldn't help but stop and stare. I had this almost uncontrolled tendency to walk up and tap the tank.
I used to like the bumper sticker that said, "Don't smoke around me and I won't fart in your face".
Look. I am the first one to tie a tree hugger to his tree he loves so much and push them both over a cliff. But I don't have any problems with the smoking bans in resteraunts and it wouldn't bother me in the least if they banned it from all public place indoors and outdoors. I'm not saying that would be fair, I'm just saying it wouldn't bother me.
If you agree with me, you are welcome. If not, that is your right as much as it is mine to feel the way I do. We will just agree to disagree.

I definitely understand what you are saying, no doubt. There is nothing wrong with disagreement - actually the lack of it would make this forum pretty darn boring

The reality also is that, using your example of the smoker who didn't give a darn about the "smoking area" - the same will happen regardless of the laws. I have some managers who now and then come to my building, and they don't smoke in the "area." Frankly, I don't have the nerve to tell them to move. Its my responsibility to enforce it, and I am not brave enough to do it yet. THat is as much my fault as it is theirs, perhaps more. We have to be willing to enforce the "laws" already in existence. People will always flaunt them out of shear disregard or ignorance.
THere is a Dunkin Donuts here (one of very few) and I like to get donuts for my staff there. But even though there is no smoker in sight, whenever I leave I can smell "it" in my clothes and it drives me nuts. I have no idea where or how, I don't smell it until I get back in my car. I can't stand it. But my desire (inherent in being a yankee) to go to Dunkin Donuts instead of the myriad local chains overwhelms it...market forces.
I think my preference would simply be how some of these come to pass.

And I think that is the difference. When you tell someone they can still smoke but only in this area, then some will abuse it and smoke wherever. If you don't allow smoking at all, you don't have that problem. Since the law passed here, I have never once seen someone light up in a resteraunt. When they had smoking sections, I remember seeing people walk through the non smoking section entering and leaving the resteraunt with a cigarette in their hand as they walked through.
I know there is no solution that will make everyone happy but I like to try and live my life as closely as possible to the following:
Cause no harm to yourself, to others or to nature.

But your last comment could lead us along a very slippery slope.
THis hobby currently causes a great deal of harm.
Cars cause harm to the enviro and to others.
Fast food...well, won't go there

Etc, etc, etc
Just playing devil's advocate....

Yep. That's why I said "try". It's the more common sense things I refer to. Somethings you just can't get around and lead a "normal" life.

Oh forget it it's not even worth the battle anymore! All I'm saying is that it's a courtesy issue and I don't think it's asking too much to get smokers to go outside and smoke. The only laws that will ever pass are the ones that make money which is why I HATE politics. I refuse to vote for these morons because they are not out for the greater good. Continue to kill yourselves and everyone around you - I'm staying home.

Wow this has been some debate.
Let me start by saying I am a smoker ( would like to quit just aint happening yet)
If I want to go out and have a few drinks then I want to be able to smoke too.
I think each establishment should be given the choice to be smoke free, smoking or having designated areas. A local bar owner hear ( near pittsburgh) stated that if they pass the smoking ban in my town she will put a jug behind the bar. It will cost you 2$ for an ashtray. That way if you want to smoke you can. and if she happens to get turned in for someone smoking in her bar your 2$ along with everyone else that has rented and ashtray will help pay the fine. Along with that a sign will be posted at the door saying"warning smoking allowed inside this establishment"
When I go to places that do nto allow smoking I go outside if I need one that bad and NO i do not stand right by the door.
I am not even going to touch the "40year old lady that looks 80 from smoking 2 packs a day" It will just irritate me and I kinda like this site.
I will also keep my comments to my self about people working at mcdonald having zits( worked there from age 15-18 and not a zit to be found) onec again I like this site and would like to be allowed to stay.
Plain and simple you have a choice if you do not like the smoke find another place to go there is plenty of non smokign places around
Did I mention I like to gamble, drink and smoke all at the same time? Does that make me trash too

Porkchop48,
No need to get irritated and I never related Cigarette smoking to trash. That is why I explicitely wrote:
Now before anyone jumps to conclusions and interprets this as me thinking all smokers are white trash, that is not what I'm saying at all.
What I was saying is that is a description of one type of person that has no respect for others and that usually could care less about others. It could have been cursing, littering, throwing gum on the ground, whatever. We were just talking about smoking and I have seen that exact person in that setting which is why I wrote it.
The rest is just my strange sense of humor. I like this site also and have been here going on eight years. Many on here know me very well and know I am not one to ever insult anyone or partake in forum arguments. I've probably got over 5000 posts (they don't count in the aquarium) and I get along with everyone very well. Well maybe not that darn RUaround.

Anyway, I didn't want you to get the wrong impression of me and think I was being rude. That's not me at all and never has been. Heck, I love to drink, love to gamble and I love cigars. So no, that doesn't make you trash at all. BUT! If you pass me in a large crowd cursing you kids while lighting a new cigarette of your old one, don't blame me if I look at you and just shake my head.
