We made polk salad last year, we got the polk when we were picking some wild blackberries. I'm not a salad person so i don't know how it tastes, but my mom and grandma has some stories about how they use to pick it and make it.

I am from the South, have always lived here except for when I was active army, but I have never heard of Polk until today. What the heck is polk?

Its just a type of plant that grows wild used mainly in salads. There arn't (that I know of) any farms actually producing the stuff.

A true Southern food then, much like 'Possum and 'coon soup. Yes ladies and gentlemen, even fresh roadkill has its uses.

Is there still a place called Monett, MO? Used to be an army camp called Camp Crowder in Monett. My dad was a WWII DI there. So come on, whats the family tree? Lets see those skeletons, I want some DNA testing.

I think the town is still there, don't know about the facility though. The town is in southwest MO around Springfield. Actually the family is around Grand Rapids, Grand Haven and Ada.
My Uncle was sent to Grand Blanc years ago with GM from STL. Then he moved to Flilnt (yuck) then settled in GRapids. My cousin moved to the Grand Haven area when he opend a Ford dealorship and my other cousin moved to Ada when she married. I will search the family tree for ya....although right now I am trying to find where my Great Great Granpa was in Ireland.:) Did your Dad retire Army? Mine just did not too long ago. My father in law was in WWII Marines
.
And the skeletons, I have plenty of them....:nervous:
Hey OT......how are things looking your way? Hope they are looking up!!
Cindyski.........Tomato sandwiches are the BEST. Little mayo and salt and about 2 ears of fresh sweet corn. Thats the best summer meal for me!!
Forgot to mention I don't care for chitilins either, save those for someone who loves them. Don't even like the idea of them

I just wonder why no one has mentioned the best southern food of all yet....Biscuits and Gravy. Hard to find here in So Cal but had a business trip back to MO a couple of years ago and had that every morning for breakfast.
BTW when you pick up craw fish always pick them up right behind their front pinchers, that way they can't get you.

Melody....I have partied HARD in every place from New York, to Florida, to Cali, but being that my dad is from Kentucky, and my mom is from Tennessee.....I was defianetaly brought up southern, and we ate all southern cooking......more importantly, those not knowing don't realize how strong family is down there, and when I visit Tennessee, and folks I barely ever talk to let me stay at their house because I am "family" ......it matches anywhere on earth. The simple fun of blasting a double barrel in the backyard without the neigbhbors calling the cops, or the fact that everyones ready to drop what their doing and bring some food over for a cook out........it f-ing rocks. The south is a beautiful place IMO. The simplicity is there, but man do I get drunk and party hard southern style while I'm down there.......shout out to Morristown Tenn.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:jumping: :jumping: :jumping:
Just try to get drunk out on a boat here in Ohio.:D
I LOVE the South.....I'm still young, and I may find my way back there yet.
Southern cooking is very unique for sure.....I didn't realize it growing up, but more and more, I started to see that the people that were FROM up north, well they didn't cook the same things at all.
No kidding at all........Tennessee, and the people there are simply beautiful. It took me awhile to figure out why everyone, and I mean each and every person, that drives by waves at you if they see you.....no, they don't know you, they are actually showing friendliness........that doesn't exist around here. After awhile, you start waving back, and it's then that you hate to come back to Ohio where everyone's a ^%$# and they are only showing one finger instead of waving. If you've never stayed or lived in the "southern" states, then you won't understand. It's all about people down there, and they don't care at all what you own compared to up here.....just who you are.
One strange BEAUTIFUL thing down there is the fact when an old barn or house isn't good anymore......it doesn't get a plastic makeover......it just stands. Nothing here stays very long....there's no room for it....it is replaced, so there's nothing old to look at and admire. I really do love the south.
ONE DAY, I will go back south where my family came from.

It's just like regular gravy but with diced tomato's in it. You brown the flour and then pour the tomato's in...mix them up in the flour for a minute or so then pour the water in...and finish cooking like you normally do with gravy. Serve over fresh piping hot biscuits. YUM YUM!!:D We have it all the time.

forgive my stupidity  but this is something i would try & dont get it  are you making a past out of the flour with butter that you are "browning" then thining it with water?
normally when i make gravy i start with the liquid then add the flour, slowly so it dosnt clump.

when my dad makes it, he has some water and flour in a pan and he hads homegrown canned tomatos to it... the flour is just a thickening agent. cook it until the tomatos are soft. cook a pan of biscuits and pour some of the tomato gravy over them... make you want to slap somebody.. <-- another southern expression... :D
P.S.>> I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT HERE! ive been everywhere in the whole US and i wouldnt trade anything for mississippi. and guys... you cant beat those southern belles!

That's my house... We are constantly having the neighbors over for cook outs... Of course, they are always last minute things, never planned.

I grew up in Texas, but I spent 4 yrs in Columbus (Capital Unv.). Very well said... If you wave at a stranger up there, you're likely to get the finger, or worse... pepper spray...
