Stocking for a 29 gallon?

New hobbiest, eager to get her first fish. I know I cant for awhile yet, since I'm still cycling and constantly adding more LR, but I'd like to know from other nanno reefers what's good to put in a tank together? I like small fish, and I'd honestly like to get as many as I can. The number ONE fish I want is a Mandarin Dragonet, so anything that will bother that little guy is out of the question. What's in your tanks?

well first off the mandarin is out of the question. it will starve without pods.
heres something good for you to do if you wanna keep one and if you have a biocube or nano tank from jbj
https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/362865/refugium-for-nanos
but a good fish for you to start off with is bicolor blenny. really fun and are peaceful fish. another one wil be 2-3 chromis. really amazing fish for school!

I have a 29g.....as of right now I have a yellowhead jawfish, 1 yellow clown goby, 1 rusty goby, 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 coral banded shrimp, 3 scarlet hermits, 2 halloween hermits, 1 emerald crab, various snails....I will probably be adding 1...MAYBE 2 more small fish
Does that give you any ideas of what you can keep in a 29g...
The lists that you have posted all over are not realistic....REGARDLESS of the fact that a fish is listed as being okay in a minimum size tank of 30g's.....you really need to look at the whole pic....

I'm not trying to put ALL those fish in one little 30 gal, Meowzer. Those are the fish I like, and I'm trying to get information from this forum about them, which are nice together, which arn't. I'm hoping to be in this hobby for the rest of my life, and I'd like to know about the fish from people that have them. My LFS is really only concerned about selling them, and doesn't know jack crap about them, meaning they'll tell me anything I want to hear to get my money. I'm no where near ready to put fish in my tank, and this is me trying to do my research from other peoples advise before I try anything at all.
I read that thread, Nissan. I'm wondering if maybe I can make my own attach-on-back kind of thing like that for my tank. Is it just a refugem that you need to grow pods, or is there more to it? If its just the refugem, I have a friend of mine who can probably help me build one. Any advise there?
Also, Chromis are damsels, right? I've been told by a lot of people that they're bullies and hard to catch if ever need be and after getting them they regret it. What're your opinions on that (all who are reading this thread)?

LOL...I thought I read a different thread that you had quite a list. Sorry if I read it wrong. In a 29g you will be very limited though. I have green chromis in my 225g. they are not the "mean" type, BUT I do not know how they would react in a smaller tank.
I told you what I have in my 29g so far. I hope that helps you some.

I wouldn't get the Dragonet, no matter what. The fish's chances of long-term survival are slim, no matter what accomodations you make for him.
If you plan to stay in the hobby, wait until you get a 4' or larger tank, then get one.
Chromis are boring. Better to get a clown, which have a ton of personality.
Also, with a 29g, I would plan on 4 small fish for now.
Clown (Ocellaris or Percula, maybe a Saddleback or Skunk)
Goby (Clown, Firefish, Watchman, Shrimp)
Pseudochromis/Gramma/Wrasse (many choices)
Blenny (not Lawnmower, unless you see it eat at the store)

yep thats it. a refugium is all that is needed to grow pods!

why not get a madarin? many people have one here and i had one in my 29g and so did nano and we have amazing results cause we have a refugium. Nano has his for almost a year in my beliefs and everything seems great. so why dont you recomend it? cause he will eat all the pods? well thats why he has a refugium. not to be harsh but its fine.
as in the fish all seem well except the skunk. the skunk is really aggressive. i had it and man i must say it didnt let me have another clown, like other clowns do. and the wrasse yea its fine but not all are peaceful. the sixline really aggressive. but the rest is good.

Thanks. I just started looking at blennys now, after reading gmann's, because they never really caught my eye before. I do want a yellowhead jawfish over the belnny if they'll bother eachother for whatever reason. I've seen them since I was a little kid at the LFS spitting mouthfuls of sand at me and I always thought they were the cutest little things. lol Havn't researched the Blennys at all yet, so if this is a terrible idea just let me know now. Anyone have any expeareance with Leopard Blennys? I think they're pretty, but with my luck they'll be agressive of hard to take care of. xD

I don't think the jawfish and blennie will have an issue. I was going to get a midas blennie to go in my 29g, but they have been out of stock on this site.
can you make your font a little bigger?

Haha nix the leoprd blenny, just looked at something. Too big, agressive, and not reef safe. So, for this tank, with the refugem when I get it, how about:
2 False Perc clowns
1 yellowhead jawfish
1 Mandarin
1 Scooter blenny or a midias blenny? (one or the other, preffered info on both)
Perhaps a goby or a dotty back of somesort if the tank allows it. Any suggustions?
That'd be it for this tank, minus the cleanup crew which I think I've already mostly got figured out.
P.s. Sorry about the font Mewozer lol

If you plan on a mandarin, don't get a scooter. IMO the tank would be too small to support 2 pod eaters
LOL don't apologize. It was just kinda small. I thought maybe more people would read it if it was bigger

WELLLLLL, while I agree that Mandarins are very colorful, I do not necessarily agree that they are good for a 29g. NOW A scooter WILL eat mysis and frozen foods.
OP. It is your tank, and that makes it your decision. Just don't try to add either of these too soon. They both require an established tank
