Switching from Dwarfs to Larger Seahorses???

Personally, I would strongly suggest against getting the seahorses at this point. Seahorses, being social animals, do best in pairs. While they can live alone, it is really not fair to them.
I'm a rather blunt, matter-of-fact kinda guy. You have no suitable tank set up to house them (I dont consider the 10 suitable for a pair of Reidi) and you have no display tank even set up to cycle.
I really think you are rushing things. There are other places that sell CB Reidi across the country. I would pass at this point.
BTW... not all ORA Reidi are bred by them ;) They do obtain seahorses elsewhere.
Just my thoughts and opinions, take them for what they are worth.

yeah , I was thinking the same thing....seahorses require a very stable , MATURE, ESTABLISHED tank, not a " my tank has just cycled" tank....there very messy eaters and create quite a bioload ...I made the same mistake in the beginning and still think about it....my newest 55g finished cycling almost 3 weeks ago , and I'm not adding my 4 horses till march or april , and then only 1 every week and half or so [ there in qt], just some cuc and peaceful fish till then , you can't rush saltwater tanks....patience is key

yeah i think that ill wait and just sayin but i do have a 29 gallon that started its cycling today lol
and i went back to my lfs and took a pic so that i can make sure the species so ill post that in a while! still got to do a little more research
but itll br worth it

Good for you !! I didn't want to come off as harsh , but I rushed things in the beginning and still kicking myself over it ,I learned my lesson the hard way, and unfortuantly lost my first large horses
....research and patience is key....I'm glad you decided to wait a bit

how did u lose ur first ones??? Wat happened??? AN o ya i saw ur thread in the seahorse section and found a pic. it of two of ur small kelloggis. THe one in the back looks like the one i saw at the pet shop and took the pic there ( still have to post it lol) and i think it might be a keloggi not a reidi. it looks almost identical!ill post the pic tom

If they are kelloggi's, that would explain the $30 price tag. Which either means your LFS is a bit confused or is trying to use the ORA name to sell non-ORA seahorses. Hopefully it's the first choice and they've made an honest mistake. With that said, kelloggi's do not have a good long-term track record. Very few have them longer than six months or so at the most.
As I do with everyone, I would suggest getting true captive bred seahorses as your first seahorses. Net pen raised seahorses, such as kelloggi, often times have the same issues as regular wild caught seahorses have. Something you really don't want to have to deal with. Yes, they are much cheaper - but the meds you need to have on hand can be costly and not easily found in an emergency.
No matter what you decide, you made the right decision waiting for a bit before making a purchase. Very wise decision! Kudo's to you! Best of luck and keep posting pics as the tank progresses.

I totally agree with reefnut. If they are kelloggi, stay away. Wait and buy good captive bred horses.
Where are you located? Maybe fill in your personal info on user cp

I think they are reidi but nor sure

pm reef nut or cranberry or cleveland and ask them to take a look

yeah thats what they said at the store. the price seemed really low though for a reidi i mean like the ones her are like $79 and ive seen them at other places for over $100 for a yellow one!!!

and i might think of buying some erectus seahorses when i have my tank set up do u know any online stores that might carry them for cheap????

lol i got more questions lol,
i went to a friends house today, and she has reidis too, and she was tellin me about how she got her seahorse and was givin me some rock and stuff that i could use in my tank but as i watched the horses i noticed that they ssort of bobed as they breathed, was this normal??? i never noticed this in othre horses??

I dont know, but it does sound like they may be gasping for air. does she have an air line in her tank. She may want to add one to see of this behavior stops

thier gills are enclosed - not like a fishes. They would probably have red areas on the side of thier heads. could just be the way they are or just need a little more oxygen in thier tank
