I have also heard that about the "regular" astrea snails...If I see one down...I flip it...
OHHHH...LOL...I read it from a reputable person....Cranberry

If that is true, then no wonder we have so many empty shells in the tank and have to keep replenishing

YUP, and tipped over they make easy prey...and you know as well as I do...it is very hard to keep an eye on your snails in a larger tank

I estimate that I have put maybe 100 to 125 inverts (snails, crabs) in this tank over the past 2 years. As mentioned, this last time was 30, and after an hour, I could hardly tell I had added anything. Where these things go...I have no idea

BTW...I sent Cranberry a pm about the snails. Still haven't heard anything %%
Hey now, it's supper time over here.
I was actually flipping back through my notes to make sure they were indeed an astraea. I knew mine similar to yours were Astralium phoebium, but I couldn't remember if they were astraea... and they are. So nope, they can't right themselves. I've had a couple for maybe 2 months now (I've been keeping poor logs since my dog got sick) and I haven't found them upside-down yet. But I haven't seen these on the rocks either, where they are prone to falling off.
Lemme go flip one now and see what happens in a bit.
Do you have hermits too?
Why are y'all loosing your snails? What's going on?

Thanks Cranberry...Yes, I have hermits too, but a very low ratio (maybe 20 to 1). I have never noticed a problem with the astrea snails, as they seem to just disappear and start back up on the glass. But yes, these new Ninja's appear to be having a hard time.

Oh I definitely do.... but as a result from poor collection, shipping, storage, post collection feeding and poor acclimation... all before they get to us. Those that take a hit before they get to me, die fast. The ones that make it the first month pretty much live for a very long time. You know I'm simply crazy for snails.
We have a bumble bee snail that has been with us 11 years. So no, I guess my snails don't just twindle away.

There's so many snails in my tank that I wouldn't be able to recognize if it's the same one for 11 yrs.
Unless I were to glue some bling-bling on the backs of them, they all look the same

There is one jumbo nassarius that's in there, and there is no mistaking him when he appears (usually once every week to two weeks). He's about 3 times the size of all the others...looks like he's had some steroids.

It's a single bumble bee snail. I don't stock them, I just have one specimen I bought when I thought they were good critters 11 years ago.
In another tank I bought a dirty dozen super small astraea... that was 5 years ago. I do the dirty dozen count everyday. So it's not that I know the snails personally, I just know how many I put in there.
