Lol. I have a table saw that probably cost more than your tank. :)

I love to build things, too. I think if I had more time and a proper work space I would have more tools.
I literally lost sleep last night thinking of plumbing this and doing it with as little stress on the bottom of the overflow box as possible. I'm pretty sure I have it figured out, though. The tank will be on the stand this evening and since I have tomorrow off I should be able to get a ton done as long as tonight I can cut and paint the plumbing support shelf. Without getting that done tonight, then tomorrow is going to be a bust.
I will also need to figure out what to do with this 30B. It has fish and some snails in it, but it also has a good bit of rock that I want to use in the big tank. The rock has some aiptasia on it and I want to bleach it. I think tomorrow I will remove and bleach the rock and leave the sand in the tank with some PVC for the fish. That way I'll be able to add the rock later this week when I aquascape and there will still be some bio filtration (albeit not much). This won't be a short cycle since I'm killing everything off, but I'd rather start off with a long cycle than with aiptasia infested LR.

Got the tank on the stand and also got the plumbing shelf drilled and painted. Plumbing tomorrow! The shelf will be attached to the stand directly beneath the overflow box. There will be unions that will serve a dual purpose of helping support the weight of the plumbing on the shelf:

The weight will rest on the female lip but once it's unscrewed the bottom half of the plumbing can be removed and the top half (which is all straight pipes) will be able to pass through it as well in case I need to remove the top halves.

Here's a few shots of the weir. I still need to clean up the scraps of silicone laying in the tank and also all the water marks from drilling the back glass, but whatever...

You can see that the visible side of the weir looks much better than the other side:

Here's the footprint of the weir through very dirty glass

Got a good bit of plumbing done yesterday. Had to modify the plumbing shelf b/c the lip on the stand wouldn't allow for the bottom half of the plumbing to slide out.

I got the bottom half of the return plumbing done as well. I decided to paint the tank and the plumbing shelf this morning and then tonight I'll finish up the plumbing so I can leak test tomorrow.

I've wanted a beananimal overflow since the first time I saw one in person. Bill (beananimal) is a member of my reef club and did a lecture on his design last year. I forgot everything that was talked about and haven't been to a meeting in a long time to pick his brain. I tried talking to Calfo about it but he didn't really know what I was talking about which I thought was weird because another name for the system is a Calfo overflow

I have water mixing for the little tank for when I take out the LR later tonight to bleach. I'm going to try rinsing the sand again tomorrow using pillowcases. All that should need to be done other than that is the upper return plumbing, a few more coats of paint, and leak test.

Return plumbing done:

Everything is glued and ready to be tested. I just need to put a few more coats of paint on and reconnect the overflow drains.

Boy, I forgot how slow it gets here in the summer, lol. Oh well, so it goes. I did an overnight bleach bath on the rest of the rock and rubble. It's in the first rinse with dechlorinator now. I have to leave for a few hours so I guess I'll throw another coat of paint on before I leave. Today: continue to rinse rocks w/ dechlorinator, rinse sand, reattach plumbing, and leak test!

Hi, been following along...I have a question,
This may sound silly...but I have sand in a bucket that needs to be rinsed...can you explain about how you rinse sand using pillow cases? It sound easier then anything I have thought of doing...but I need details.

Put a few scoops of sand in the pillow case and run water over it. I'm just doing it in a utility sink and I'll keep running water over it until the water runs clear. Rinse and repeat, eh?

Looking good!!! The plumbing looks clean and neat. Is the return plumbing PVC sitting on the the top of the tank for support?? What is the PVC going into on the top middle of the tank? The pic is dark (because of the great job you did painting the back glass) and I can make out details.

Thanks! It's the first time I've used 90*'s instead of 45*s, but it's also the first time I'm not really concerned with the flow coming from my return. The return is resting on the sump and on the top of the tank for support. I think what you are looking at is my SCWD:

After reading through one of snakes threads, I've been thinking of getting rid of all my current fish and starting off this tank with three yellow tangs.

Pretty neat. I just watched a Youtube video on it. What size model do you have running??

Me too.
I always said if I ever got a bigger tank that I would have to get schools of yellow tangs, green chromis and anthias.

That's pretty much what I'm going for. Not that I have a big tank, but it's big enough I reckon. I'd like some blue in there, any suggestions?
