Not that it matters , but i make more money in a year than you probably make in 3 ................... but that is totally beside the point , I am very happy with life and what it has presented to me , Im just not cruel enough to put things that depend on ME in enviornments they dont belong ....... if that makes me hate life well l am a true life hater .......... but i think it boils down to being a responsible pet owner and you dont like that therefor you ask questions you know the answer to and then tear down others when you dont hear what you want to hear thus "Tang police Ignore" because you didnt want "Rhetoric" answers ............ I would really say and i have never advised anybody to do this .... but it would probably be best for marine life for you to get out of the hobby .......... unless you can Capatilize on all that knowledge that you seemed to have have soaked up like a spong since you were young

All your posts make me LOL because of your ignorance ....... I cant wait for the day you goto Reef Central to find the same answers and stop coming here. Your a Joke and I truly believe you will never gain the experience that it takes to keep a marine tank. I would try a cat if I were you.

But I gotta ask, and I hope you will answer gilligan, this is a sincere question, I ain't trying to start drama, but... What exactly would the difference be between somebody who has studied tangs in tanks and in the wild and understands their space issues and even why they are like that, as opposed to the tang police?? Is it an anger thing? Is that how you deem the "police"? Cause I sincerely thought it was the individuals who never really tire explaing the needs of these fish since they are so high on the most wanted list. You know, there's only so many times you can explain a "cycle" or a "bioload" or "water chemistry" but I thought tang police were tang police because when it comes to tangs they are most eager to share what they know. It is unfortunate that it is not what most hobbiests want to hear, but it still remains the truth.
But since all the flames are gone, and I really hope they are gone cause that is really not my intent, I will leave you with your two choices.
You can put your own wants ahead of the hobby, and get a tang. That would be considered (by most) the irresponsible hobbiest, but since you asked the question to begin with, you do not appear to be the irresponsible hobbiest.
OR, you can understand that different creatures have different needs and your tank simply does not meet optimum requirements for this critter, no matter how tempting and pretty. That would make you a responsible, put the hobby before yourself hobbiest.
You will find many of each, but for me, the absolute best hobbiests, the best care takers, are the ones that say, "I really want that, but I cannot provide all that he needs" There is no greater act of responsibility in this hobby IMO.
If you could ever go to a public aquarium, or even your LFS if the tank is big enough, watch the tangs then hold up your hands 2 feet across and imagine that same fish in that confined space. It doesn't even appear logical.
I look at my 90 sometimes and imagine how small of a puddle it would be and how sad it a tang got washed into it.
No flames intended, and I truly hope you see that.
But I still wanna know the answer to my question.

Perfectly Explained

FInally, there are many taht probably consider themselves "tang police" but the ones I intended to avoid were as described above adn the know it all/rude types I don't have much use for. Thank you though for the well thought out question and statements

Now That is a Conscientious Decision ...............
But in regards to the last part I do believe that you were rude before anybody else got rude with you if you read all the way through the thread..... , you cant expect to push and not get pushed back here ,people have very Strong beliefs on pet care , and you cant cut them down for that.
Anyway Good Luck in the future

Now i am personally glad that you have made the right decision. I myself have been in your position before...heres my Story so to say before i discovered swf.com i had invested in 3 beautiful tangs a sohal, sailfin, and yellow tang. Right now they are currently being kept in a 75 gal the sohal is just pushing 6 inches and yellow is 3 and sailfin 3inches.Now in seeing that i have done my reasearch after buying the fish(was inexpierenced and didnt know any better,i am building a 100gal that should be up and running shortly and the 280 is being built this summer when basement is finished hopefully. All tangs will be moved into the 280 by the end of summer. When i first got my fish and did discover this website i was happy and started talking about them and came along people who started flaming me. i took there advice in some ways but could not return the fish because i would not get full credit back for them. so instead of losing out on the fish i have decided to build bigger tanks for them and move them up asap. Now with that said i know how you feel i felt the same way you did just not quite in the same position as you were. I hope this might make you feel a little better. And good luck with the hobby hope to hear more from you!

Nice sign me up. Just wondered how a twelve year old kid got to be a member. I guess it was her vast years of experiences.

Gillian, these guys have very valuable advice. Dont be frustrated with comments. Take all the knowledge you can get from them and improve your situation. Sometimes seasoned Aquarists forget what its like to be a beginner/intermediate and can lose patience. Ultimately their intentions are to keep our fish happy and healthy. I have learned alot from their posts on this subject and found that I am not doing the best thing for my Tang too. I really do wish you the best of luck.

Just go and buy the fish and stop listening to these tree huggers. If they truly loved the fish the way they claim to, then none of them would have them either and would be leaving them in the ocean where they truly belong.

This is excellent advice. Do what you want, regardless of the consequence. Hedonism at its best.

Then you have to spend a week in a little cardboard box so you'll know how a tang feels in anything less than a 75g tank...
