I agree. I love seeing all of the different types of aquariums, but its just so inaccurate. It would be nice if they could give more details about lighting, filtration, etc., but I think the general public wouldn't understand or care.

Too right if you must do something like that at least inform the public properly this could kill a couple hundred fish a curse on the director.

Funny I have actually purchased my refuge from that company. As for the question of the tank being able to handle a bio load we cannot say positively that it cannot without seeing the plumbing of the tank. I do not know if they show you if the tank is plumbed to any axillary filtration system

Check out this post on Atlanta Reef Club from a member and store owner that got to meet Brett from "Tanked" and brought up this very question:

That was cool, thanks for sharing. And then this was pretty cool also on AR:

I completely agree... I HATE the way they set up the inside of their tanks, but I love their acrylic tanks. Hey, their company name is ATM, which stands for "Acrylic Tank Manufacturing".... not "Aquarium set up and management company" or something like that, lol...

Not necessarily. You may not have an ammonia spike if you used a lot of media from an established system or have a lot of macro algae to absorb it. Most of my LR came from an established system and I never had an initial ammonia spike.

Supposedly, in their next season show, they will go in to a bit more about what they do establish their bio-filter. This according to an interview that the owner gave recently.

Now that may be interesting IF they can do it w/o all the mumbo jumbo fighting....LOL
I like the pretty fish and all...and the different tanks...BUT the actual people annoy me

The only one that I like is that "Redneck" guy in the shop. He is kinda funny. I am glad that the show is gaining some fans though. I think that a second season where they show more of the set-up would be interesting. I have seen that mrsaltwatertv interview before and you can tell that the ATM folks know that the show gives people the wrong impression. So, lets hope it gets better.

If you guys have been watching, they just did a show where they were out in my neck of the woods and went to Atlantis Marine World. The complanning and questioning immediately started on our local forums and the owner of Atlantis, Joe Yaiullo, who's also the head of my local reef club chimed in on the conversation and really defended these guys. He brought up that the cycling process doesn't make for good television, other than for those already in the hobby. He also stated that we are not being shown and told a lot about the filtration, but if you pay attention, they're very often using bio balls and they're usually "seasoned" or "cured" or whatever term you'd like. He brought up that while they can't show everything, they're bringing a whole new audience to saltwater aquarium keeping, and hopefully experienced hobbyists will be there to guide these newcomers in the right direction.
Now to throw this in, not saying it's correct or the "accepted way", but I have tossed bagged sand and a few pieces of cured live rock in a new tank, floated fish, tossed them in and had no losses. It can be done, it's just frowned upon.
