Thanks goodness I have never had to go that far...but the lid off and fan on the water should make a BIG difference IMO
It definitely should. I'm running 3 250watt halides + 4 T5HO's, the halides are on for 7 hours and the T5's are on for 12 on my 155G and I have NO chiller, just a fan aimed at the sump all day and my tank never goes above 80F. Same thing on my little 14G, I have a 150watt halide on a 14G tank, halide is on for 7 hours, only a fan blowing across the top of the water and that tank never goes above 81F.

I can't believe you had not already lowered the air

Lower the air and take the canopy off and add ice, add frozen veggies in a bag if you have to
lol....of course it feels cool...remember, a human is 98.6 so 85 is 11 degrees cooler

I think you really need to get another thermometer.....take your top off for now too....

I'd get a second thermometer before you do something drastic to your tank. I find it hard to believe that at this time of night in a house that's been in the mid 70's all day that your tank is really that hot.

HERE HERE exactly what I have been thinking

For the rest of the night I'd leave a fan running aimed at the top of the water and leave the canopy off. Leave powerheads off, etc, just run the return pump and leave the AC on in the house.
If you have a heater in the tank, turn it to 76, this way the tank won't get too cold

Tomorrow, go to the store and get another thermometer, a digital one Coralife makes a cheap on, even ***** usually carries it.

Don't keep adding more ice at this point, it's been hours.

Your tank isn't that large. I think your thermometer is busted. If not, what I have suggested above should keep the tank at least stable until tomorrow.
