There are way way way too many gray areas as far as the rules go. So if we dont want these problems make it black and white. and if rules are broken then suspends or ban.. that will take care of all of it.. if this seems difficult or inappropriate to do then these issues will always happen.
This is the internet anyone is allowed here, this isnt a gated community, so sometimes you have to swing the hammer to keep things under control.
"Swinging the hammer" isn't even necessary unless someone pushes too far. The rules are pretty clear and the rest are judgment calls on the part of the mods. People know, or should be reminded, that they are not allowed to post links, make personal attacks, use profanity and such. It has just gotten out of hand.

Im just tired of seeing the Obama did this, Obama did that thread ewvery 3 hours.. geez. Geez talk about something McCain did or said
There's the problem, McCain doesn't really do or say anything that's worth talking about. Look at Denver tonight, there is a line of people miles long who want to see Obama speak this evening. McCain would have a hard time filling a VFW hall
Our right wing friends here in the Aquarium talk about Obama so much because they have secret crushes on him and need their constant Obama fix

This is true but but like you said, if nothing but a slap on the hand and a deletion of the post is done about it, dont expect it to ever stop.
I know you were speaking in a sense that people will get misinformation, but if I want to show people a link to a competitor because there is a cool rare fish for sell on there (that swf doesnt even have listed as an option to buy) I will do it knowing that the post will be deleted I will get a warning. But hopefully a few people will see it before that happens.

Your not gong to change this thread into a political thread as well are you? or Maybe you did already. WOW you bring up how there are large groups of far left democrats at the DNC? Is that breaking news? Did you figure that one out all by yourself? lol

Really what I think they should do is remove the aquarium for maybe a month. The people that come on here to just post on the aquarium will leave and the rest of us can enjoy it.

That isn't what I said. Usually a deletion and a warning are all that is needed.

In that case you would be a repeat offender and the mods would probably take some stronger action. My point was that many of them have not been around and some members have decided that it is free reign to not follow the rules of the board. To say that this is only going on in the aquarium, and not the rest of the boards as well, is inaccurate. There is no point in talking about shutting down the aquarium when the issues are all over the boards. I see that one of the mods is back though so hopefully things will begin to get back to normal around here.

it's amusing that the thread basically asking that the aquarium be dissolved now has 70 posts, many of which are not related to the OP.

and it is us.

The OP was not asking for the aquarium to be dissolved. It was just a critique of a few posers trying to copy CFR's sense of humor.

I know it didn't start that way, but several people have suggested nuking it. Filter out the off topic posts and you have a majority vote to get rid of it. Yet, here we are...hashing out the finer points of the off topic forum.

Well, boys, I reckon this is it — nuclear combat toe to toe with the Rooskies. Now look, boys, I ain't much of a hand at makin' speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggone important is goin' on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin.' Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human bein's if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelin's about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump — we got some flyin' to do."

Slim Pickens was one of my favorite actors, the likes of which we shall never see again.
That being said, someone's gonna have to go back and get a load of dimes.

- Increase the amount of mods to ones that are on the board actively
- keep reminding people what is allowed; us users, when you see a link posted, remind about the rules...
- neighborhood watch... policing the group as users
I dunno

I don't think it serves any purpose to delete the Aquarium. There are so many neutral threads going on that it would be sad to see that go.

The problems don't just reside in here.
I know you feel very passionately about sharing the truth, and I honor and respect that. I agree with you that in a few cases here and there, there are extremists who think it's OK to put 18 angels in a 20 long or turn their tank into a "Tank of Death" (Which is OK if you have a mantis tank, i guess!) However, I've noticed that across the board there are a lot of different experiences and a lot of different methods, and I think we should leave the newbies to decide for that on their own. I believe that newbies have enough discretion to notice when they read threads started by fish torturers (2%, my guess) and people who are on here to share knowledge (98%, my guess).
I agree that things need to be more strict in certain areas, but wouldn't most of you agree that things could stand to become a little more lax in other areas?
To give an example, if I were to put a link to an aquarium furniture site (tanks, sumps, refugiums) or even a DIY how-to site - SWF does not sell or offer any of THAT stuff, so why should I be worried about posting something like that?
Or maybe they do allow it. Here's a test...
http://yearofthenick deleted this link.com
*********************************
Its been said it was against the rules WHY WHY WHY TEST it to see how far it will go?? also another thing is this that site also sells things that SWF.com sells. Its a good thing you took it out as I was editing the link off but yes I did look at the link before deleteing.
It's an aquarium furniture site. Sure, they sell fake plants and vacuums too, but I think I should be totally allowed to post this link, since it's not REALLY a competitor of SWF.
Also, I really need to find a good sump.refugium but nothing online is really good, and what i'm looking for is usually $800-$900 - no thanks on something that expensive
