I don't think it's dumb, it's arrogance. He consistantly does the exact opposite of the advice he is given when he asks and then gloats as if he is the smartest human ever because it doesn't instantly derail.
 
No one thought the bottom was going to fall out of the 55 gallon in the first 24 hours. No one thought the damsel was going to die right away. But because they didn't, he has to brag about how smart he is.
