The only thing that was'nt done by hand in our little work shop was the top piece. For that we had to drop a large pine tree, bring it to a mill and have it cut sideways to get the slab! It was then thrown in a big oven to speed up the drying process. If it was not baked we would have had to wait close to a year for it to be dry enough to use. Not pleasant when a piece of furniture drips sap on you! But there was several hours spent on it after that with a planer and an orbital sander.
The stand is made out of pine and trimmed with split willow. The split willow actually had to sanded by hand (no power tools just a piece of sand paper) the power sander was taking out the beautiful red colors! I probably have at least 10 hours put into hand sanding the split willow pieces to bring out the reds!
All of the logs had to be skinned to start. That was also done by hand with a draw knife!
The rustic log look is definately not for every home, but I live and a log cabin and love log furniture! I only have a few pieces that aren't log furniture (but they will be soon) except for my couch!
If you think the stand is nice check out my bed! The bed project puts the stand to shame!
Sorry if the bed is off topic, but it is a water bed just doesn't have any fishys swimming in it!
The slab on the bed is from the same tree as the slab on the stand (as well as the doors on the bed)
