Times are tough, but this is rediculous...

You got something other than trane you want me to demo? I'm taking any/all donations at the moment....

Luckily it was unit #3, which controls the shop, not the offices. Workers are not complaining yet, but they will soon when it starts getting cold out.

We try to install heil units exclusively. Problem with trane is it is a dealer only product--only they have the parts, only they can service them. you cannot put in universal parts, so you're stuck paying 2-3x what a part on the shelf would cost, and you have to pay a "trained" trane service man 2-3x what a standard service man costs.
silly thing is... Trane was/is an American Standard owned company (they make furnaces/air handlers as well, but American Standard was chopped into bits and pieces so i'm not sure if they are still making them) and they do have units that have universally replaceable parts...

So I thought of an idea, not sure if this would work or be practical...
You could get some re-bar, and bend it into a sort of cage around the unit and pour concrete around the ends to hold it in. Of course it could be a problem to service, but you could just cut the rebar with a cutting torch and then weld it back when you're done.
Of course if a thief used a cutting torch it wouldn't help, but that might be too much work and draw to much attention.

Well if you want my actual opinion, I'd build a lean-to, vent it really well maybe put a few fans on the roof. Put a big swinging door on it so it isn't impossible to access, build a fence around it, then charge it. With a few thousand volts. Shouldn't cost too much and you can have a fun office game of who has the guts to pee on the electric fence.

I know you are joking, but you are not far off from one of my thoughts......
I noticed that the thief pulled the breaker shut off before cutting the wires. So it did cross my mind to wire a 220V outside, to the actual cover unit itself. This would be a major issue with someone accidental though. But for a thief...

I'm not really joking, build a cover, then a fence then charge the dang thing. Their is no point in being nice to the bums.

place a pad lock on the AC switch so they can't turn it off. locking it on..if they take it with the power on they deserve it.

I'd imagine you would get into big trouble if someone got hurt/killed (even the lousy thief). However, if there is a way to actually padlock. I just installed a rather expensive AC unit in my house and have been concerned with the theives....I already got my Sony Bravia stolen last year.
Is there a problem with actually working for a living?????? A novel idea, earn your own money, save, and buy what you want, or what you can afford.
I know, I'm terribly old fashion.

if you could kill my dog by hands (without a stun gun, tazer,or a real gun )i would be surprised!! my dog would love bite on command (or if someone was robbin me). if they were around my home i would face no charges!!and on the michel vick stuff: he had to many punk friends (narks) lookin for a payout.i hope he gets outta jail soon and plays again.he had a great bloodline (with the dogs ) sad to see them go

Good idea, but this would be illegal. The law requires this disconnect to be located right there beside the unit, for fire reasons, etc. So paddlocking it would negate the purpose.

I supposed this is their job, as sorry as it may be. But people like this will never get anywhere in life. They have their temporary gratifications but it always ends up catching up to them. I can only forgive (not forget) and as Scotts said, just try to make my things more secure and less appealing than the next guy.

My uncle runs a heating and air business in the Raleigh area, and I believe that he deals in Trane units (if you are looking to replace that unit with the same thing) and probably other brands as well. They might be able to locate you a used unit in that area, but I am not sure. PM me if you would like the company name and number.

Wow Dwight, I am so sorry for your loss. To think that I was considering moving near my brother in NC

It is the same here. I was having a discussion with my co-workers tonight about something similar. I now work at a clothing store (second job). The employees of our sister store, which is right across town from the store that I am at, used to have to park behind the store. People have been going around drilling gas tanks to drain them. They don't even bother with the siphon. They just drill them. This discussion led to copper theft. There have been many foreclosed new homes in the past few years. Once the people are out of the houses thieves have dug up the pipes. Crazy!!
Needless to say, they no longer park out back. The back is lit, but it is more private than the front of a mall or plaza.

I vote for the shotgun with rubber bullets... that's exactly what I would do. Seriously. I may buy a shotgun and rubber bullets just because it's such a great idea, even though the crime is minimal in the area I'm living right now
