Look into DKNY watches. My ex girlfriend bought me one a few years ago and I still get compliments on it and people asking where I bought it. They'll range in price from a few hundred to over $1000. I have two Rolex and I still prefer this DKNY watch.
I'll have to look into the cassio....ps the guy i am shopping for is going to be an army doc

Look into a brand called Rado...very nice and some are in your range. Ive had mine since high school and its still kickin. Not too many people have heard of it either, everyone has a Rolex, look for something he's never heard of
just a thought.

I would recommend the Seikos also. I've had several and they are excellent watches. I wear a two-tone Rolex Submariner as my everyday watch now but I wear the Seiko when I ride my sportbike. I'm just paranoid about my Rolex winding up on some paramedics wrist if the worst happens.
If he likes the look of the diving watch, Seiko sells a Sub knock-off as you can see compared to a couple of Omega and the submariner:

I like the chronographs also:

first one starts at 550.00 on the big auction site BLING BLING, second ones under 400.00, ends in 5 hours, third one is 620.00. hook him up girl..... these are watches that make people take a second look. it isnt a big clunky rolex or seiko....... scratch proof too. do your research, then buy the Rado.....

I can't believe no one has suggested Citizen, I personnally love the Calibre Model ECO drives, I just can't convince my better half to buy me one.
I do have a Sieko and it's nice but I leave it in the drawer in favor of my Fossil chrono, it is just more comfortable to wear and because it was considerably less expensive I don't worry about hurting it. I get tons of compliments and people are really surprised when they find out it's a Fossil.
Point # 2 , I also have a Gshock it is purely a recreation watch. I wear it when I MT bike. You cannot hurt the thing, The guys I ride with call me Capt Crunch because I crash so much, and that watch just keeps taking the thrashing.

If he really wants a watch, and you really want to get him a watch, take him shopping and have him look at a few and to tell you which ones he likes. Have him decide on 3 or 4 so that he doesnt know which one you will get him. Since money is a concern, take the sales person aside and tell them what your budget will alow and ask them to only show him watches in that range. You could take him to a few different stores for a bigger selection.

You should check out the Citizen EcoDrive. They usually run about 100-200 cheaper than the Seiko. I've had mine for over 10 years with NO problems or batteries.

So a freind of mine had a citizen eco model that I saw last night. I am pretty much sold....I loved it and he(being a good friend of the boyfriend) says that it is his favorite watch
