What corals are you planning on? Srry if I missed it on a previous post. Most brands do fine, SPS,LPS and some other hard corals need HQI Metal Hilide. Most others would be fine with compact fluorescent.

Not sure yet really. That's why I wanted to go ahead and get a light that would let me keep anything I want. That way when I decided which ones I want I won't have to worry about lighting.
I am putting a second coat on tomorrow afternoon.

I kinda want a 75 gallon now...too late though.
Any helpful tips or advice about reefs? I really don't know very much about reefs, and I have a lot of stupid questions...I want to see what you guys say before I ask them.

Ok fine I'll go ahead and ask.
Do you feed corals anything? Anemones and clams?
Do you put any chemicals or anything in the water for corals/anemones?
Does the R/O unit take out the chlorine in tap water?

I am still fighting to go Cherry or Black on the stand I am building.
I like the trim idea. Gives a real finished look to the tank with the border around the bottom. Nice build.
Feed corals- yes Cyclops, mysis and Phyto, DT's oyster eggs. the list is endless.
Anemones- a silverside or Tiger shrimp frm the supermarket once a week or so.
RO should remove EVERYTHING from given water source.

More- Water chem is in the beholder. Each of us have our own regiments. I would advise the beginner to hold off on most supplements untill you get the hang for balancing your Cal and ALK. those two directly effect one another and push the PH with each.
All coralvite, Vital, Purple up, Kalkwasser, Calcuim, Alk Buffers, Strontium, Montiblenum, Iodine, Iodate, Mag, Iron, Bromine, The list goes on and on. Most additives are just ways for the manufactures to get you to buy more supplements.
Trace elements are replaced with waterchanges, wait and see how your bioload effectively draws from your water before you go adding anything. Odds are in msaller tanks the waterchange will take care of everything. Its on larger tanks that changing 50 gallons per week isnt always possible that replacing trace via supplements becomes needed.

How often do you feed corals? I'm guessing you just dump the food in the tank? Do you feed clams silver sides as well?

I make sure my calcium is around 450 (along with all your other parameters being good) and then add PhytoPlex 3 times a week for my filter feeders and that's about it (I turn off my pumps, but keep the phs on to allow it to circulate in my tank). Was told I don't have to do anything new for my torch or frogspawn. We'll see how they do, but so far my zoos, GSP, and feather dusters are doing great.
It really does depend on what corals you get though. Like the sun coral, takes more work and you have to spot feed, which is why I'm avoiding that one for a while until I get the hang of an "easy" reef tank.

Well, I have decided that I am going to go with a 75 gallon. I will have to make an extension for my stand and exchange my canister filter, but I think I will be much happier in the long run. It will give me more room to do what I want to with it. I will take my 55 back sometime in the next few days.

Will it be hard to change your stand? It looks so nice.
You are probably right though, you'll be happier the larger you go. Now that I've had my 125 I look at the 55 and think, wow, there is no way I'd be able to live with that.
I'll flame myself before anyone else does, I've seen some great looking 55s on here, so don't get me wrong, it just wouldn't work for me.

Thanks for the compliment on my stand, but it shouldn't be too hard to change it. I should be able to make it blend pretty well. It will only be an extra 5-6 inches off the back, so it won't be too noticable...

Oh, well that's good. I was thinking you were going to have to lengthen the stand.
So I remember in the beginning you said you were going to do FOWLR. What are you thinking now?

There is just no point in trying to stay away from the dark side.

Well, I did it. I took back my 55 gallon and bought a 75. I am much happier now! I can't wait to get it set up!

I got my 75 gallon for 154.99, it's an AGA. It's the cheapest I've seen anywhere by far. Also, I put another coat on my stand. I am going to make an extension for my stand within the next week or so.

Sounds like a good price to me. Congrats!
