"Whale Wars"

I keep seeing the commercials for this show on the Discovery Channel. I tried to watch it last week, but nothing happened except they all faught over whether they would have enough gas to get back to port. Has anyone seen this show? What is the point? The crocodile hunter ship goes out and looks for ships that are killing whales, then they do what? I don't get it?

I was thinking I must have seen a bad episode, but I guess not. I think I was wrong about the channel. Does it come on Animal Planet? My son watches "Pet Star" every morning, and I think that is where I saw the commercials. The commercials looked so good! I thought it was going to be another "Deadliest Catch" which I love.

its a bunch of tree huggers breaking the law and proclaiming they are doing right in the name of the whale...

Seen the show once and see the commercials all the time. While I agree in principal with what they are about, they way they do things are completely illegal and are in many cases acts of piracy. The episode I saw showed a couple of them boarding another country's ship without permission. That is absolutely an act of piracy and they should be arrested and tried as pirates

LOL they were arrested, it got them lots of publicity! The whalers are using a loophole to continue killing whales.
The tree huggers can't get the government controlling the area to do anything, so they took it upon themselves. What they are doing is very dangerous. The volunteers however are top notch, they select the best of those offering their services to save the whales.
They use egg bombs to stink the hunters indoors and it lets the whales get away. The danger is the rattle trap little ship they use and they go into dangerous waters to hunt the whalers, not to mention the anger of the whalers.
It plays on animal planet. Most times they can't find the whaler ships, so yes the show is bad...like the ghost hunter show...what a dud. It takes so long to even get some kind of something happening that you lose interest.
JMO... the whalers are the bad guys. They claim to be catching the whales for scientific research (the loop hole)...BS, not every day, and not in the numbers they are killing and catching them. The Japanese Whaler ships are operating against the law, they are poachers.

The best of the best? Really? No way.... While they may be the best tree huggers that voluneteered, they are a bunch of hacks. Everytime they try to launch the Delta (the inflatable dingy) its always a mission to do and something screws up. They can't use the radar to save their own lives, and can't navigate the ship. The Captain had to be awaken from his slumber to guide the ship through the ice field on the premier of season 2.
I have watched most of the episodes. Last season was better and I can't believe they opened with since a weak first episode. The thing is you have to have a DVR to record and hast foward through the show. It makes them palatable.
BTW, they're Japanese whalers not Chinese
. I'm sure all us Americans would be pretty steamed if they referred to us as Canadian or Mexican.....

I did not know there were so many maritime law experts on here...Before you say its illegal you may want to do some in-depth research on the subject fisrt. FWIW-The reason 2 people were arrested is b/c in one episode they actually did board a sip without authorization. They were released though shortly after.

I see the captain of a ship putting volunteers in harms way for his personal gain.
If you want to stop whaling, going after people trying to feed their families isn't the way it's going to happen. Ya gotta go after the government officials allowing it to happen. Stinky eggs would go a lot further during a political speech.

Agreed, however they are VOLUNTEERS, they know excatly what they are getting into before they board that ship.
Too bad the japanese gov't doesn't seem to care...

.

That is an interesting perspective. What personal gain do you mean? What is the captain getting out of all of this. Isn't he also a volunteer?

They probably are paying $$ to shoot the trips. So that is money in his pocket...
Maybe noteriety in the kook fring tree hugger world.

You make a name for yourself inside those circles, you could get paid to make speeches. Write books of your experiences, put in charge of some government eco program. Or hired by some corporation, after the tree huggers pull an "green" shake down on them...
Even if it is "volunteer" there are lots of future payouts...

I started watching the show this season and first of all I agree with DVRing the episodes. You want to cruise throught the commercials. My daughter and I watch it just to laugh at the knuckleheads on the Sea Shepherd (they call it the Steve Irwin). They are definitely pirates. You jump on someone else's boat and that is piracy. They are lucky the Japanese did not throw them in the water.

From what I heard (could be a rumor) but the Captain of the Sea Shepherd was a founding member of Greenpeace and they got rid of him because he was too militant! I do believe that the screaming lefty crew actually think they are doing something good but it's like watching the keystone cops!
I like whales as much as the next guy but the Japanese aren't breaking any laws.

IMO these "whale saviors" are doing nothing to really prevent whaling by the japanese. In japan there is a common view that whales arn't really animals worth protecting that they are smelly, ugly and lazy animals that eat all the oceans shrimp population. Its part of japanese culture to hunt these animals. I don't believe in whaling but I also don't believe that attacking fishermen in international waters. Also the show sux, its boring and I'm suprised its still on tv.
If discovery channel wanted something that would get viewers, they should go and follow Somali pirates through their daily lives and high sea piracy and escapades lol.

I am shocked that these idiots haven't been shot or had that boat sunk out from under them. Those whaling boats have shown an extreme amount of patience with these clowns. I have gotten to the point I don't like to watch because I end up rooting for the whalers.

I have nothing to add to this. It's like you peeked under my skullcap. This captain obviously considers his crew expendible. They have no clue what they're doing and he just lets them continue. I hope he's prosecuted when he eventually kills one of his volunteers.
