What are we paying are cops to do?

In ancient Sumeria Hammurabi took the duties of public officials seriously. Officials were expected to catch burglars. If they failed to do so, officials in the district had to replace the lost property. If murders were not found, the officials had to pay a fine to the relatives of the victim.
Think that would work today.

Also enjoy what I hear on a daily basis. It's called Tinitus. All I hear 24/7 is this ear-piercing high pitched noise in my head. Why? Because I was a roadie for 2 years in the 70's, and listened to 'loud music' practically every night. Headphones or ear plugs? Please. Who wears headphones/earplugs to a Led Zepplin, KISS, ZZ Top, or Metallica concert.
the day you cant hear a police/ ambulance siren over a stereo, you let me know. considering those sirens hit over 100 decibals, its pretty hard to drown them out, even when there a couple hundred feet behind you. and im pretty sure the electronic sirens used by cops/ ambulances oscillate in a pattern that can be heard through pretty much any type of music.
lol, and who says i use it everyday. im not the type that gets in the car and the volume cranks right away. half the time the stereo doesnt even go on once im in the car.
so basically you guys are stereotyping me for a typical "punk" with no regard for others. correct?

you kind of give yourself that stereotype when you say:
just becasue your old and in bed at 9, doesnt mean the rest of the world has to succumb to you.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those sirens aren't that loud. I had my radio cranked up the other day, not really that loud, and the next thing I know, this ambulance is on my tail with his lights and siren going. Guess I can blame it on being old and my hearing isn't that good anymore -- What's that sonny? Don't have my hearing aids turned all the way up....

and that was not in reference to that must be what you do, but he said he hates it when someone does...which i agree, that is annoying, i my music is too loud and my windows are down and i come to a stop light i'll turn it down, i hate it when people dont and its rude in my opinion...i like to hear my own radio instead of the rumbling vibration shoot through my car from a vehicle three cars back

My favorite is when the music is booming from a stereo that cost $2000, tires and rims $2000 and it is all on a 1992 buick skylark with primer worth about $500!!!!

Unfortunately, there are laws on the books in most states regarding riding bikes on public streets. Anytime you ride a bike on public roadways, you have to adhere to the same laws as those who drive in motorized vehicles. That includes stopping at stop signs, stop lights, turning, etc. As stupid as it sounds, it for the safety of the cyclist and the individuals sharing the roads with them in their cars. Our city doesn't provide paths or lanes on the major roads for cyclist to use. Therefore, you see the road cyclist riding their bikes one, two, and three abreast down feeder roads. The road may have a 50 MPH speed limit, but they're taking up an entire lane doing maybe 30. It's up to the motorist to get around them without clipping one and getting sued. I narrowly miss a rider the other day in my neighborhood at a four way stop sign. I came up to the four way, looked left, and saw this guy on a bike coming down the road towards the intersection. He appeared to be slowing down, and I had the right of way. Just as I started to go through the intersection, he comes flying right in front of me. I honked and he flips me off. That's when I wish a cop was around.
So sad as it is, that's the law. I ride my bike around my neighborhood on a daily basis. When I come to a stop sign, I slow down like MIKE22cha, and do a 'Hollywood Roll' through the stop sign if no cars are waiting. However, I do a scan around me first looking to see if a cop is around. A neighbor of mine actually got a ticket for running a stop sign while riding his bike.

I've lived in 5 states and all had the same laws, bicycle must follow the rules of the road. I got a ticket for riding against traffic before you twerpes were born

I am amazed you guys didn't know your subject to traffic laws. You think the laws of physics don''t apply just because you are on a bike?
If the cops have increased enforcement you can thank bicycle advocacy groups that demand it. They want the same rights as a car as far as being able to use a lane of traffic etc. so with rights comes responsibility. You also have protest events like critical mass where large groups of bicyclists intentionally block rush hour traffic the last friday of every month to protest whatever. Cops and most other people take a dim view of such activities.
By the way, the police investigate crime, not prevent it. They are a deterrent. It is highly unusual for the police catch a crime in progress, unless you are caught speeding or running a stop sign
. A good lock and a security system are crime prevention.

Enforcing traffic/bicycle/pedestrian laws accomplishes (at least) the two following things:
1) It may keep you alive longer
2) It is a great tool for us to find out who is out and about in the community. By stopping you (legally) I can check you for warrants. Yes, I have got several felony warrant arrests on people disobeying bike traffic laws. By enforcing speeding laws I find people driving without licenses. Enforcing things that seem petty to you leads to greater things for us. We get a lot of bad people out of your neighborhood by going after the small things.

Bicycles are classified as vehicles and are therefore subject to similar laws.
In my state at least.

i think theres a difference between vehicles, and motor vehicles though. getting onto this highway by my house theres a sign that says something about motor vehicles only. then it say no bicycling, horseback riding, etc...
im sure its different in every state though.

You know why they tend to stop and hassle you for not following rules of the road on a bike...
1. Maybe another driver decides to not stop either and you end up getting plastered by their vehicle. vehicle>bike
2.Maybe the older and wise have seen things like tthis where they had to tell the bicyclist family that their son/daughter/whoever has been killed from not following the rules of the road.
3. And the last is what you see on a police car"To serve and protect" well he is just doing the right thing and maybe saving your life

So if you think following the rules of the road is stupid on a bicycle.. well tell someone else to scrap you off the road after someone runs you over.

I could not agree more. Police officers are the most under-respected people. They have seen and experienced things that none of us would ever want to, and because of that, they perform their job to reduce death, crime, and accidents.

Wow this thread has gotten way off point. Just thought I'd share a funny story and get some good laughs. Anyways I ride my neighborhood a lot never had any close calls, not a lot of cars, and if there is I go on the side walks, and I slow down and check both ways when coming to a stop sign, but don't go to a complete stop because that's just stupid. Waste of energy getting back up to speed.
