what about having chat open for specific discussions then closing it down. i was on another site for awhile that would have one of the knowledgeable people (usually a mod or site admin) pic a topic. then you could log on and through chat read the info then ask questions on the topic. i loved that!

That isn't a bad idea. First one I liked yet.

Even better. Why not invite some of the more 'famous' people in the swf world. Publicize it on swf.com home page and see if you can draw in some new members to the forum that gets a few well known speakers (no offense to Beth, Sep, 'O" and some of our experienced contibutors/mods)

You mean like Ret Talbot?

I kind of meant people here that participate. I can read the other's stuff in their articles. But they may indeed attract some other people.

Someone please elaborate/explain more on this idea

Seems everybody likes it, but how is this any different from what we have now?

That is what I was thinking. Posts are pretty much a live chat with anyone that is on... They don't get closed down and you can get more info later.

Having participated in online chats frequently, I can say the two do not have the same feel about them at all.

That's what I'm asking...What are you talking about? I'm not on any "online chats" or "other forums", so what exactly is any different from what we have here?
Not trying to be an ass, just admitting that I don't get it. We can start a thread, people can read and/or post ("live" I might add), so what's different?

Sorry, supper was ready.

But I still don't know how to answer it. It's more like a natural conversation. With the rules in place here, they would never be able to have a chat open 24/7.

I have checked out live chats on other boards... They are alright, but most are seemingly useless. I don't know how many people have all afternoon/evening to talk and then have the conversation end and be closed out. I would rather be able to go to sleep and come back to it in the morning... JMO though.

have you ever been on espn or some news sites, they'll have their personality they are promoting go up and have a special "chat with so and so" they set up some rules, like you can submit questions, and he'll answer them kind of like a cyber town hall type meeting.

Totally agree with Sep here (forget that she's a Shark), but I don't understand the concept that if you walked away from the computer and came back, the conversation is over. For example, I missed this thread until tonight.

The concept of walking away and missing the conversation refers to the fact that the chat will be disabled and the info from the conversation will be lost or at the very least, you will be unable to continue the conversation since you missed the opportunity while the chat window was active.
A thread, on the other hand, remains open to input indefinitely unless closed for some reason.

Heck you even see this on other store sites where you can "talk to an expert live" from time x to time z.
Basically it is a live free flowing conversation, usually on a set topic or theme. It is very different, IMO, from a thread. I wonder if you could even do a webcam presentation or something followed up with live questions via the chat.
