Was there tonight and was completely FLOORED!!!! (Pet W*rld)...never buy fish, but snails & such. Went to pick up an urchin, over heard the dimwit tell a 20 something yr old that an Emperor Angel would be ok in his 55 !!! This thing was a huge adult. Im suprised I didnt get kicked out (although i wouldnt care) when I told him that he was wrong, that he shouldnt tell the kid that. Worst part was, when he left to get the urchin I asked the kid how long has he been in the hobby, and he just set up his tank 2wks ago!!
I wish there were ppl like me around when I started out and they told me I could put a anenome in my 55 with 80 watts of NO lighting!!!
It is truly remarkable what some of these places will due for a buck. Guess Ill just have to go a little further next time.

Basically everytime I went there (when i was a newb) heres how it would go
Me: "So what would you recommend adding?"
LFS: "this this and this they are very hardy"
Me: "okay ill take that"
1 week later
Me: "It died"
LFS: "Ya those are really hard to take care of, even in the best systems they die

well not so much me but my friend who went to a certain chain that told him that 10 or so goldfish in his 20 would be ok. i mean most people would be ok with that but you shouldnt do that. So he bought 7 or so the first time he went and when i told him he couldn't do that he said "well don't you think they had to go to a college to get a job there, so they would know more then you" at which point i peroceeded to lmao and almost break the lamp kicking and laughing.

When I was a newB my LFS told me that a yellow tang and porcupine puffer would be fine in my 29gal. I bought them both, and at the same time. The yellow tang died, the porcupine puffer lived for quite some time til I finally took him back and traded him in since he was way to big. Boy do I wish I would've researched first like I do now.

No joking... "These two colorful fish and great for beginners and are perfect for a 55g. They are called Mandarin Gobys". That's a true story... the store owner (who made this statement) and I had a few words after I realized the mistake I had made. Unfortunately it was to late for the Mandarins.
So, make sure you do your OWN research!!

not really what i heard, but what they did. Went in to lfs to buy premixed salt water, and the lady started to take water out of thier system. i said wait a min. i wanted fresh mixed salt water, and she told me this was how they sold it. 1.50 a gal for dirty tank water. i told her no thanks, i would go somewhere else, and she seemed offended. :scared:

A friend of mine for some reason thought I would really like this 'cool fish' for my bday. He got it, and I didnt know any better. It was a hawaiian trigger, which the lfs guy told him it wouldnt bother my firefish or chromi's. I didnt know any better, and wasnt going to take the time to look it up as my friend has this fish in hand. So we acclimate him, and i swear before he gets out of the bag he has chomped most of my firefish and is chasing down the lil green chromi's. Oddly enough he left my one domino damsel alone. The damsel just swam right behind him all the time for about 9 months, then one day the trigger swung around and killed him.

there is a lfs by me that was telling a customer that a mandarin would be good in a 1 1/2 gallon nano. I laughed at the salesman and asked him how he could say that to someone and not feel bad about it. the customer took my advice and left the store.

at a chain which is often bashed
-woah! what is that?!
-thats a snowflake eel
-aww man... i only have a 29 gallon... will that be okay?
-oh yeah! that will give him pleanty of room!
-so after you set up your tank, you are going to need to wait a few days, but a week is better.
*one week later*
-atnk all set up!
-yeah!
- ok then! time to start adding fish!
-what are some good ones taht wont die since this is my first tank?
-try this coral beuty angle and a tomato clown. very hardy and great fish.
-after i realized these were wrong... started going to a LFS
-woah! that fish is awsome!
-that is called a mandarin dragonette...(in a 10 gallon tank)
-those are awsome! is there anything speacial that i need for them?
-yes. you are going to need some live rock. between 10-15 pounds should do it
-sweet! i guess ill get some live rock now and the fish another time then
-oh dont worry, those can all go in at the same time
*a week later when i realized i was completly lied to*
-yeah.... not enough copepods to support one of these.... i need some store credit for him
-oh, that is because you need better lighting for your tank. you cant grow pods without better lighting.
-how much is taht going to cost?
-well since you have the eclipse system, we are going to need to replace everything. it will cost about 200 bucks for you to be able to keep one of these fish...
pffft
the things people will do for a buck these days

I like to "visit" things that are expensive before I buy them...or before I've done enough research to feel prepared to have them...
So I've been visiting this one black volitan in a ***** near my house. I love him. He swims up to the front of the tank every time I come in and shows off for me - he's gorgeous, miraculously very healthy looking, and eats like a pig. But I can't have him - 1. I've got a 12 gallon tank, and 2. I'll never buy livestock from that chain.
The guy working there comes up and asks me "So when are you gettin the little guy?"
I say "Oh, I can't really get him... I just like to look at him."
He asks me why not, and so I tell him about the 12 gallon eclipse that's only 3 days into its' cycle.
He looks astonished and goes "You know you can cycle a tank with a lionfish, right? And he's the perfect size for your system - I've got a red volitan in mine!"
L-rd help us.

that one is tough to top. lol
My last trip to a LFS I was having a tank drilled, while standing at the counter I heard a guy say he wants this yellow tang. he asks how many other fish he can keep with it. employee asked what size tank? customer says 30g. employee says probably 5 others... something like a picasso trigger would be great.
Not a bad store livestock wise... but, I luckily learned years ago... don't expect anything but a used car dealer mentality there.
know your stuff.. because they usually don't.

A lfs I check out every now and again had a tank with a yellow tang and a hippo tang they were only about 1 inch each. I said to the owner there cute. She said yea there for people with Nano tanks. I played dumb and said but dont they grow to be very large . She said they will only grow to the size of the tank there in, I said hummmm I would think they would end up dieing in a small tank she said well you need to just keep good water for them. I said well I would not recommend selling a fish that will out grow a tank and most likely die .She said they will be fine for some one with a nano tank again. i said well if you feel ok selling them to someone with a way to small tank that tells me you really dont care about fish. She got a little huffy and said well you need to read more about this hobby for you dont seem to know to much. I said I think you need to read more about what you do for a living and walked out. What a dumb ass to be so inconciderate and lack of know how in there own business.

Went to P3tc0 one day and saw a young lady doing a 20% water change in a salt water tank that had several tangs and angels. She used one of those hoses that attached directly to the faucet. After she siphoned the water out, she immediately flipped the switch and started putting water from the faucet directly into the tank. After she filled it up to the top, she took a bag of salt and started to pour cup fulls directly into the tank.
I said: "Excuse me miss, but I really think you should pre-mix the salt and water for 24 hours before putting it into that tank.... and I hope you're using R/O water"
She replied: "You don't need to do that the salt mixes as soon as it touches water, I know EXACTLY what I'm doing... ....what's R/O water"
I turned around quickly and vowed never to buy fish from them again.
