I was in a lfs in franklin square NY and they sold a dumb nut customer 1 lta and 1 bta to put in his 125 gal that he said he had 60 fish in with NO lights. When I got involved to stop the madness the guy told someone else to help me quickly I was waiting too long. Needless to say I left....can't do business with morons like that.

Thank you for that, I would be SO much happier with an 'I don't know' than with a bullsh*t answer.

so, I go to my one "sell fish at all cost" place on Sunday to drop my 125g off to have a 2nd corner overlow put in. bought it with the intent of FW, not reef... so didn't think I'd need insane turnover in the tank.
I'm helping the kid put it on the dolly, and he's looking at my tank all confused. he says "uh, you already have a corner overflow" I said, yeah, I want one in the other corner. he says "why do you want 2?" I told him, it'd be a reef tank. he says "so?". I informed him of the turnover rate requirements that some corals need. he says "so exactly how much are you wanting to turn it over" I told him I'd start off at 20x and move to 30 when/if needed.
You would have thought I told him I was planning to grow alien babies in my tank.
he said "you only need 4x... MAYBE 5x turnover". I laughed and said uh, no. you'd be lucky if your Fish lived in 4x turnover. he said no way, you're crazy, 4x is fine.
I literally stared at him and couldn't do anything but blink for about 10 seconds. I gave up and just said "look dude, the tank is here... will you drill it for me or not?"
If it weren't for the fact that they'll do a corner drill + overflow for $30, when most other places charge $70 Just for the acrylic... I wouldn't think about having to talk to them. lol

It appears that a lot of you have a big problem with *****. The few that are around me are just fine. All the fish are healthy, they never order anything that can not be properly cared for in their systems, they are very well staffed and the staff is very personable and friendly. I frequent there stores often and have bought a lot of fish and inverts from them. I even got some of my live rock from them and it is nicer than some rock I ordered online from a reputable website. I saddens me that the chain has got such a bad rap because of a few bad apples. There is over 700 stores in the chain so I would like to hear some of you who have been to the "good ones". And not to mention some of their special prices are outstanding, for example- Black and White Heniochus, 15.99, Bangaii Cardinals, 11.99. Snowflake EEls 17.99 just to name a few. Come on lets hear some GOOD ***** stories :happyfish

one pet store I went to I told them I dident need a ph test kit cuz I have a ph pen and the guy dident know what that was? they test peoples ph with the color tests saying the color is right about there your watter is fine? color ph test not a good way to go
and another place I went this guy was selling a custmer a 125 gallon tank and said that 24 hours after puting the sand live rock and watter in that he could come back and buy like 10 fish this same guy told me that I did not need to test for alkalinity and of corse in his main display no corals and his corals for sale in a small tank were slime coated with the brown algae and was loosing color

O.k. for me the worst thing the lfs guy said was "Boxfish can exude a poison under severe stress, but In 20 years of being in this profession, I have never seen it happen."
I lost my entire tank and had to start over again.

I told the owner of the LFS her anenome was upside down and dead. She flipped it over then grabbed a gold fish out of another tank--gave it a death squeeze and put it on the anenome and told me it was just hungry. The Goldfish regained consciousness and was swimming around in saltwater. I didn't stay to see the outcome.

Mine for the most part too. THe current owner, which the store has always been owned by his family, has been in the business for 15 years. He will only hire saltwater sales people who 1)have first hand experience(tank of their own) and 2) demonstrated knowledge of saltwater systems. I have been told on several occassions over the 10 or so years I've been going there that something I was interested in would not
be ok for my tank. They are really good at asking lots of questions about your tank(water parameters, livestock, size, ectc.). And they offer alternatives if something is not ok for your tank.
This excludes when based on my desciption of green glass-like balls, the bubble algea in my tank was ,unknowingly to me, mis-ID'd as a type of sponge that was harmless. Two weeks pass I am still concerned b/c also I have a forrest of aiptasia(so I found out)growing. I find saltwaterfish.com and find the real ID's. With plans of gettin some emeral crabs and pep. shrimp, just for fun I took one of the bubble algea with aiptasia growing on it, surprise aonther guy gave me the correct ID. Although, partly my fault for possibly giving a bad description, it was still bad advice. I now only get info from the owner and the second guy, who has helped
much in the past.

I go to a pretty decent FS in our area and as long as I can talk to the owner, we are fine. But he has this lady who manages his fish section and she tells me the last time we were in there, that an elegance coral is one of the hardiest and easiest to care for. I couldn't believe she would even say that if she had known anything about them. Then I ask her if she has any sw tanks since she was going on and on about her chiclid tanks at home and she says she threw it out because she hated it. Said she hated fish that hide all the time even during feeding time. I'm thinking I would hide from her too. Then we are talking about the seahorses they have in and she tells me that all the hype about putting certain fish in certain sized tanks is just not true. If you like something, get it and it will get accustomed to your tank and its surroundings. I wanted to lock her in the closet and see how long it would take her to get accustomed to that. Unfortunately, she wouldn't leave our side so I was unable to talk to the owner and let him know all the bad advice she is handing out. We have found one LFS that is "only" 150 miles away that seems really knowledgable and tells you every little detail about anything you are looking at buying. Actually the only person I have ever heard warn someone about the toxin possibly released when fragging zoos. :cheer:

My LFS are very very expensive they sold my friend a mag 12 pump for 200 bux, the fish are double priced as anywhere else. I think of it as the bmw of the lfs because although they are expensive the live stock is stocked on a seperate floor the "qt floor" for a month before you can buy it. I feel it is worth it though because they have the healthiest fish in Ny. The livestock always looks great and the tanks are also well maintained. They are also amazing at plumbing but don't get me wrong they will sell you a whale for a nano tank.

I worked at a distributor to most of my lfs stories are of them as customers.
A lfs owner returns 48 heaters he claims are defective. Every single one had a shattered tube. I asked him what happened, he said "the dang things got real hot, but they broke as soon as I stuck them in the water" .

Besides that fact that it was initially stupid to stick a hot heater into water, you'd think he'd figure it out before he opened the second case at least!

That guy owns a lfs
His livestock return that day was even worse. 20 hermit crabs that he tried to cycle his reef display tank with. Our guy told him "yeah, land hermits tend to drown in reef tanks." :scared:
