Who likes Cell Phones?

Necessary evil for sure, the only reason I have one is for emergencies like when my old sports car broke a fuel line and left me stranded. A call to AAA turned it into almost a non-issue. Without the phone, I would have been walking a few miles and been worried the whole time about leaving my baby abandoned on a rural road. I'm definitely not the person that has their phone ringing all the time or spends all day texting.

I only got one after I was wiped out in the car wreck because I wouldn't even be able to change a tire now.

Hi,

I almost never even use my phone to call out and I don't text ever. However I like my phone...it is my remote modem for my laptop. I like the freedom a cell offers, and you can't beat it for emergencies. I don't use the home line. I have a land line phone, I just don't bother to hook it up, I just use the cell.

I view it like a tool, just like the kitchen knife, I use it when I need it, and forget about it if I don't, and miss it if it is gone from it's usual spot..I always buy the best, I believe you get what you pay for.

I loathe the cell phone. It is one of the major banes of my life.

My iPhone comes in handy for a lot of the other things it does, GPS, games, portable video, etc. However it's the impact to society in general that irritates me to no end about them.

It used to be that I enjoyed having it, it was nice to have the convenience of reaching anyone or anyone reaching me - of course, that was before everybody had them. Unfortunately, nowadays, EVERYONE reaches me, and expects me to be there to answer it. My phone is paid for by my company, so I have my company email on it as well. People expect me to respond more-or-less immediately to every call, every email. Voicemail is not an option. Not responding promptly to all emails is not an option. Turning it off while in a movie theater is a chore to plan. I have a boss now that is much more understanding than the previous ones, who had no qualms about calling at 1:30AM.

It's not just my company though... friends and relatives, they call, and if I don't pick up, they want to know why not - often, I get flat out accused of "ignoring" them. I hate having to listen to other people talk on their phones in restaraunts. I hate the way people drive because they are on their phone. I hate how seldom I can have a conversation with someone without the phone ringing or email dinging. It cannot be ignored, the conversation stops while the phone gets the attention. I hate sitting in the car with someone while they carry on a phone conversation for the entire time. I hate people's stupid ring-tones. I hate texting - I have it blocked on my account, and when people find out that they can't text me, it's as if I threatened one of their kids.

I hate that our lives have become so connected that everyone expects everyone to be reachable at any time.

I seriously need to move to a shack in the woods where I can publish my anti-technology manifesto in peace.

Uni-Bomber, Alert!!!

I agree, 90% of the time I wish we didn't have this technology. Mine seems to have an uncany nack of going off everytime I have my hands in the middle of doing something. Or my boss beeping me on the 2way while I have my hands in the middle of something and if I don't respond within 5 seconds he keeps beeping...BEEP BEEP BEEP
. I hate that! But the worst is in the morning time when you're on your way to work and stuck behing some chick trying to put on her make-up and talk on the cell phone at the same time...completely oblivious to whats going on around her. And you know she aint talking about anything important.

3 years I spent installing wireless communications equipment on towers for people to use these things...ugh, what have I done?

Hi,

Poor thing, I can't imagine having to answer the phone. I don't, and those who know me just accept the fact that I seldom bother to answer or check messages until 1:30 am because of my work schedule (night shift) Believe me they don't want a call back at MY hours.

I know there are those who must have one for work, and I can't even imagine how invasive that would be. I also must agree about the restaurants, and people driving. However I get up and leave if someone considers the phone more company than me...it works every time to get a point across. Most quickly make a reply that they will have to get back to them, they have company.

I am of the older generation and I demand respect and give it to others. My oldest granddaughter, who LOVES her phone does not brush off Nana to talk or text. The only person who ever tried to text and hold a conversation with me was a temp at work…how rude. I just walked away and let him chase me down for instructions on what to do.

The thing that really irritates me is the commercials. They make it seem like every grade school kid in the country has their own phone and if you don't give your kid one something is wrong with you.

My kid actually stole a jar of change from us his senior year to get one. Problem is he couldn't make the monthly payments so he didn't have it long and when he finally admitted taking it he had finally got a job. I asked how much was in it and he wouldn't cop to it so I told him it had to be at least 150.00 which I figure was about 50 high. Rather than admit how much it was he agreed to make 3 50 dollar payments. I just considered it a 50 dollar fine for stealing from us/

I never asked for a cell phone. I would be lying if I said I never wanted a cell phone. Nowadays it's rare to see a kid over the age of 12 who doesn't have a cell phone. What a waste of money. My parents pay for the bill but we have a plan and I keep my use to a minimal. That's not to say I'm not appreciative for the things they do for me. I have to admit that I've used it a lot recently, but that's just because I'm working on my Eagle Project and have made more phone calls than I can count. Texting has actually been really useful for me. The service is terrible in the area that I'm doing my project, so phone calls rarely make it through to people I need to contact frequently. Texting comes in handy in those situations. I do not text my friends very often. I'm not antisocial, I just can't stand to stretch a two minute conversation over the course of an hour.

I have a million phone pet peeves. I agree with the 2QUILLs. It seems that my phone remains completely silent all day but at 5:30 when I put my hands in sticky pizza dough, it goes off.

I do have a bigger pet peeve. One time I decided to go to be early. When I woke up I had 8 missed calls from one person. I was mad, but assumed they had an important question. When I called back, she just wanted to tell me what she thought about a movie I told her to watch. VOICEMAIL! Why on Earth don't people use it?

Can't live with it, can't live without it.

All the schools around here...you are not allowed to have them in the building.....of course all the kids do though

I like the convenience of being able to call if you are stuck somewhere....being out in a rural area I got one for the kids when they were driving....many times my son had a flat and was able to call and let me know.....

I HATE TEXTING.....At least if you call me and I am busy I can tell you....with a text...it just rings....and then rings...and rings....also it takes forever, and as PEZ said....I could have had that whole conversation in 2 minutes instead of an hour.....LOL

I will say though......I will never NOT have a cell phone. If I don;t want to talk to anyone, I turn it off...simple as that

Texting, whats up with that? A couple people the wife works with couldnt get it through there heads. WE DONT TEXT!!! It costs 20 cents to send or receive a text. Yet they continue sending her texts until we cut the service. Is it that hard to speak?

My school will allow you to have them in your backpack, you can only use them after school hours though (but it really doesnt work). They used to not allow them in the school (they would even searsh backpacks) but then parents got pissed at that.
my parents wont buy me one so i bought a pre pay phone from net 10. its deactivated right now because i realized that it was completlety unnessisary for someone my age IMO, yet everyone else literally does have one. If it were up to me, i would get an ipod touch (my brother has one), you can get a (i think its free) texting app (which is really all my friends use) and i think there is one for phone calls to (but im not sure). Either way, way parents agreed to a cell phone in 2 years.

I am pretty much in the same boat as SCSI. I have a love/hate relationship with my phone. Between family, friends, organizations, hobbies, and acquaintances wanting "free over the phone IT support it just rings off the hook. Often in the evenings I just refuse to answer becuase that is my time with my wife. I constantly get guilt trips about not answering my phone from everyone. I could care less anymore though. My voicemail even says, "You've reached Wade, as you are probably aware I don't do well at returning voicemails so your best bet to reach me is to send me a text." On the other hand, I am always using the various apps I have.

I guess I am the only one here that really likes my phone and doesnt mind texting. My wife and I both have Blackberry's and we use BBM all the time for quick messages to each other. Much easier to send a BBM message saying that I'll stop and get something for dinner than to have a phone conversation.

That being said, I am probably the only IT Professional on the planet that is not on call 24/7. My company pays for half my cell phone bill and there are only about 5 people in my office that know how to get a hold of me off hours. The only time I ever get a call is if one of our major systems is down, which happens maybe once every 2 months or so.

Like any tool, the cell phone is only what its owner makes of it. I have a "no live cell phones" policy in my classes. If a cell phone rings, the student is banished from class for the day. If a cell phone rings o ra student uses one during an examination the exam paper is immediately confiscated. I don't mind cell phones at the appropriate time, but, unfortunately, too many people don't understand the word "appropriate". [/rant]

I only use cellphone for important matters, I hate receiving and forwarding quotes, for me it's a waste of time. School where I came from do not allow cellphones inside the campus.
