WorrBaller's 40b of AWESOMENESS!!!

Some of you might know me. I've posted in the nano section mostly but I just purchased a house and I have finally set up my dream 40b.
During the move from the 29 to 40b I lost three fish (I pretty sure it was stress 'cause all of the corals and inverts are fine), a firefish, royal gramma, and six-line. I was pretty upset until my wife said, "well, now you can get more fish."

So that is where I'm at, the tank has been set up since 4/16/10 with everything (except water and new dry sand) from my 29. I'm starting to get the diatoms but so far it hasn't been an expolsion. Okay enough chit-chat pictars! (sorry my camera broke, all I have are cell pics)

My daughter testing the new tank.

The metal stand my father-in-law built for my b-day.

FTS (4/16/10), a little cloudy from the transfer.

And the sump. I still need to get those powers strips off the floor.
Equipment:
AGA 40b
FNI 150W MH w/their 20k bulb
20L sump
Reef Octopus NW-110
Old old old jager 150w heater
Catalina something (800gph)
~2-2.5" sugar size aragonite sand
~50lbs LR
Fish:
O. Clownfish (I've had this guy since 2/4/09 through 3 moves)
Firefish 4/22/10 (brother-in-law picked him up as a housewarming gift)
Inverts:
Orange Linkia starfish (one of the smaller herbivorous species)
Some sort of conch ~1.25"
5 nassarius
5 trochus
3 blue leg hermits (pain in me arse!)
Corals:
Orange digi
Orange monti
Green sps (can't think of the name right now)
Bonsai type acro (purple base with green polyps)
Frogspawn
Xenia
Misc. zoas/palys
Firefly echino
GIANT purple mushroom
Trumpet coral (I thought this guy was dead until I put him in this tank)
Algae:
Cheato (in the sump)
2 types of red algae in the display (I'll have to post pics to get id's, they came as hitchhikers)

Okay, sorry for the lack of updates and pics but I'll make up for that now.
I bought four chromis and now I'm down to two.
I bought a tribal, or black, blenny and he died unexpectedly.
I now bought a yellow assessor and he is doing great, eating and swimming around. He went to the cave I had hoped he would. I haven't seen his quirky behavior of swimming upside down yet.
With the yellow assessor I picked up a large frag of stylophora and it is currently on the sand bed. I'll leave him there for a while cause I don't want to lose this coral as it is one of my favorite corals.
And pics:

I've changed this ^ side, I'll try to get updated pics once I find my camera.

Thank you! I finally got the right side the way I want it. More places to put corals and some nice caves.
Really wish I could find my camera.

Wow! Talk about neglect. This thread and my tank currently.
So I have zero time between two kids, wife, full-time school and full-time work. Therefore my tank hasn't gotten the attention it needs. I currently have an algae outbreak but I don't think it is catastrophic, just a really ugly. Meaning I could turn it around with some elbow grease.
So I have a few options on the table that I can't really decide between.
1) Sell everything
2) Give away fish, inverts and coral and store tank, sand and rocks until I'm out of school (1 year)
3) Downsize to 15g for easier maintenance (only 5g changes vs. 10g)
My thoughts are on #1 I can't find a buyer so that is almost out. #2 I'd really miss having the tank for that year. #3 There is no guarantee the 15 wouldn't succumb to the same fate as this tank.
Personally I'm looking into downsizing but I need help and want to hear some of your opinions.

What about option 4? Dedicate one hour every 2 weeks to do maintenance. I work 50 hours a week, I am a full time student and I am very busy in a few activities. I just squeeze tank maintenance into my schedule.

I agree...you need a #4 option......40G tank.....6G w/c's every other week can be done in a matter of a few minutes with the right equipment...

2 votes for Option #4!
and think of how rewarding it will be at the end of the year knowing you pulled it off.

True I forgot about that 4th option. My wife (who rolls her eyes at this hobby), acutally suggested it. I can do the maintenance at night when I usually have time. Tank maintenance instead of a movie :/

Also I just have to say I love this forum over some of the other boards out there. I posted the same question in that other forum a few days ago and zero responses.
Thank you so much for the quick responses.

I also agree with option #4. I know it can be a pain, but I personally think that in th long run, it is totally worth having the tank.

I do still get a lot of joy from the tank, even though it is dirty right now. I would set it back up once I'm out of school but I'm 80% sure my plan now is to keep to a routine somehow.
What are your guys' procedures for making water changes easier?

I have 2 containers.....since you have a small tank.....I will only tell you about that one
I use a 12G garbage can......mix SW over night in it with a powerhead.....then I have a maxijet 1200 with a hose attached......Put the motor PH in the tank, and drain the water I want to change out....
I then place the PH in the new water.....and pump the new water into the tank
5-10 minutes

I take a baster....and as I am draining the water....I blow the debris off the rocks and sand...and NO it will not hurt it......Just rinse the PH after each w/c

Cool, sounds simple enough. I was thinking the same thing but I thought the debris would hurt the PH.
Do you have an RO unit or do you go somewhere to get your water?

I would love to get an RO/DI but it just isn't in the budget right now. Plus I have a hard time thinking of was to make it work for drinking water also.

So I took the initiative and cleaned the tank today. Took 3 hours but it is done. Changes 15 gallons, scrapped the back glass, and siphoned up the diatoms on the sand.
Feels so good to have a moderately clean tank again.
Plus I finally hooked up this 1/15hp chiller my friend let me have (long-term loan really). I'm sitting pretty at a constant 78.
Now my plans include getting a new bulbs for my sump and MH, beefing up my CUC and cracking down on a consistent water change schedule. I put it in my phone to remind me every Wednesday at 8:30pm (after the kids are in bed). I'll look into getting a pump and hose to make it quicker.
Wish me luck, and feel free to nag/berate me about keeping up on the maintenance.
