Would this fish be a good first choice

As for the 275 stocklist i would go with
yellow tang
blonde naso
blue hippo
sailfin
kole or flame fin
instead of Achillies tang look into a orange shoulder, easier and much more peaceful (still add it last)
other fish could include
a few longspine cardinals (better schoolers than chromis)
a pair of clowns (maroons are mean)
1 male and a few female anthias (just feed mysis several times a day)
Fairy wrasse(s)
and a few more
this group should get along fine in a 275.

I would not try the anthias either, not just because of their feeding, but also because they don't survive well in a fish only tank. They are mainly found on reefs and should be kept on reefs.
Don't jump into anything because you can loose a lot of money trying to gain experience in this hobby.
Also, I salute you for asking us before buying any animals!
This will be a reef tank.

Any chance of getting a pic of this tank before fish? 420lbs of rock seems like a lot of rock, but sometimes certain rock can really be heavy and not really big. I am just worried that the fish don't have any room for swimming. Since you are dead set on a naso or two.
I have a thread in the fish photograhy called 275 gallon diary. There is abot 8 - 10 - even 12inches in some spots for the fish to swim in the front.

Well, the Desjardini and the Sailfin are basically the same fish, just from different regions, I'd go with one or the other. I personally have a sailfin and will be getting a yellow and haven't decided if another yellow or a purple, but I do agree that the sailfin is an awesome fish. As long as you stick with the group of 3 you really can't go wrong with which ones.

ok thanks

i'm surprised no ones pointed this fact out.....the achilles tang is a very hard tang to keep. they need specific conditions which would be a lot easier to get a powder blue than the achilles. also don't get a maroon clown fish unless you want to buy an anemone for them. i have a pair that constantly fan the sand which in turn makes my rocks fall because the way i have them positioned in the sand. the only way i could get them to stop is to buy a long tentacle anemone. i would have got rid of them but i've had them for 5 years.
Yes Im aware that the achillies is a hard fish to keep. It will be one of the last fish we put in our tank IF we do. Does the powder blue fight with the blue hippos? I will be buysing a bubble tip anemone.

i read this thread and 12 huge tangs that grow to be some of them almost 2 feet in 275 is a bit of a stretch..i have a prurple and a hippo in my 120 i have also 180 lbs of LR...so most ppl would say youyr better off with just the 1 tang if that lol yet the OP wants to put in 12 and until i posted no1 said anything 275 and 120 is the same if u break it down.. u cant have 12 tangs in a 275 or 400 no matter how much rock they grow to 2 feet..so i can ssume adding a powder blue to my RT to make it 3 tangs would be fine.. i dont expect any answers nor would i listen since i belive you ppl enjoy bashing me and giving me wrong advice...so like i said trial and error the modo..will psot results for other newbies to read.

This was very hard to read.
Nobody gets a kick out of bashing you, nor do I think people go around giving wrong advice on purpose. This thread is for the OP and their tank, not yours and what you want to add to it.
I don't recall anyone saying that one tang is better than a group. If you have the space, add as many that your setup can support. Either one single fish, or an odd number usually work well for same families. Mixing different families also is not usually a problem given that the setup is adequate.
I still don't understand how you can make educated decisions for your tank based on what's being talked about with this list. "If they wan't to add 12 tangs, my tank should be ok to add more."
The OP's current list (with the exception of one or two fish) seems pretty reasonable. It has also gotten shorter. Personally I would not add more than 5 or 6 tangs.

12 tangs in 275 is ok i'm assuming since no one here has said anything about it...so i currently have 2 tangs in my 120...so one would think i can get away with about 4 more tangs as longs as they are not the same family...
so in this 120 it will have a purple tang 3 hippos and a powder blue...based on this thread i see no problems.
Would you think I would have to buy extra filteration??

I currently have a Male Blonde Naso and a Naso (not sure if it is a male or a female yet...have to wait to about 10" on a regular naso for streamers). They get along ok, but it is due to the fact that there are other more aggressive fish in the tank. The Naso is definitely more aggressive and goes after the Blonde sometimes, but they get along 90%. It is much better than my Powder blue was with my hippo tank thats for sure.
I would suggest getting 2 of the same kind. I like the Blonde better, but my regular naso was net caught off hawaii so I cant get rid of him/her either.
How bad was your powder blue and your hippo? My da wants the powder blue BUT I know its get ick easier than the blue hippo

This person is going to have to buy an entire box of seaweed salad in this tank daily, and some tangs never learn to eat it. Competition for food is probably going to kill many of them reguardless.
yeah, this isn't an beginner tank, but it isn't impossible.

Probably what do you have now? And I do agree 400 lbs of rock is going to take up way to much space.
A protein skimmer, up to 400gal, a big sump at the bottom, and a rfegium that will be loaded with plants. Do you think the plants will help with the nitrates. There is already 420 pounds of total rock in the tank. 220 pounds ofit will be live in the futre. Right now 220 pounds of it is lace rock were the other 200 pounds is live rock.

How often do powder blue tangs and bue hippos fight. Do you think they will fight in my tank being the size it is.

I personally haven't had both together, but it is my understanding that that would be ok since they aren't the same type of tang.

Absolutely, that is why you need to set absolutely set up a qt tank! If a tank full of tangs get ich that won't be pretty.
