So I guess individual states should be allowed to outlaw abortion then?
Well, then you have issues like illegal abortion clinics that practice unsafe procedures that ultimately could destroy the health and mental well-being of the mother to be, and most sensible people realize that. That's not much different from the intolerance of drug use. Before you laugh or get cynical about that statement think about this. People do drugs, whether you like it or not. Illegal or not. They are available. If drugs were regulated there would be a record of where the drugs came from and who would be liable for selling them to whoever. But no, you leave them in the hands of people who don't care one way or the other if John Smith down the road is about to OD or sell his body for his next fix. You're putting non-taxable profits in the hands of real criminals who are living it up while hard working people are getting their butts handed to them when the bills roll in every month.
As an example; Fact: Cocaine (and no I'm not a cokehead and no I don't suggest anyone go have a heart attack messing with it) BUILT the city of Miami. Dade County was booming while the rest of the US economy was in the crapper during the late 70's/early 80's. That's money the country could be building itself on. The only difference is people wouldn't be killing each other over the control of the distribution of the product because THAT portion of the illegal-drug trade would be out of the hands of criminals. Gone. No longer a factor. It would generate an insane amount of tax moneys which could in turn fund BETTER drug counseling on a LARGER scale. Say... $30 billion dollars annually that's being blown keeping these same people in jail every year for starters.
We allow people to become alcoholics.
We allow people to die of lung cancer from tobacco addiction.
We allow people to hide their undesirable personality conflicts with pharmaceutical drugs (some which cause more OD's than illegal drugs as well as suicide).
Yet we don't want drugs to be legalized because they are potentially hazardous to our health and/or addictive? They ruin lives! Just like alcohol, tobacco, gambling...
Seriously? That makes no sense.
It's not pretty, but it's our reality. People are allowed to make stupid choices. But only stupid choices that benefit the government in one way or another. "You can do it your own way, if it's done just how I say."

Okay, now start all over.
How about the people vote on it.
There is an endless list of subjects people would throw a fit about, either way, win or lose. Can't please everybody. Too much emotion and ego.
The only way to solve it is to allow the people to speak. Majority rules. If you're part of the minority, sucks for you. The problem is if it's not something someone agrees with then "So and So is a Commy! So and So is a blasphemer! So and So is crooked!"
Then do something about it or shut up and move.
Tolerance is an amazing thing. I don't think it's anyones business to tell me or anyone else what is best for them. Then again yes, some people absolutely do need boundaries in order to protect the people around them. Who cares if So and So hurts themselves. If they are mentally capable of making any decisions for themselves, then that's THEIR problem. I have both traditional conservative views and liberal views. I don't like abortion but whether or not I think it is ethical, moral, yadda yadda... is beside the point. It's not my place to tell someone else what they can or should do with their body. And religious value has NO PLACE in the political decision making process. It creates a prejudice that is not fair to those of other cultural backgrounds and that is NOT what America is supposed to be about. Unfortunately there are a lot of fanatics who beg to differ.
It's not black or white. It's not left-wing or right-wing. No easy solution for any of it, but it seems like a lot of people think there is. Their way is the right way. Pshh. The only RIGHT way to do things in this country is to do things in UNITY. We have to sit down, hammer out the details, and come to a compromise. The best ideas from both sides. Did I say BOTH sides? Why are there even sides to this? We're discussing American politics here, so under the assumption we are all Americans in this conversation, we all want what's best for everyone right? (Or do we?) Well the best thing for EVERYONE is to get along and help each other out, but that means potentially losing profits. How dare there be a suggestion that sounds.... SOCIALIST! If one candidates choices don't match your own, well maybe you're the one that isn't right. The big picture is not my views, or your views. It's what will best suit everyone, and their children, and the next generation, and so forth.
United we stand, divided we fall. I hope you all have parachutes strapped on.
Our government is screwed and the people have allowed it to happen. It needs to be reformed, and the people of the country need to get off their butts and get involved instead of letting someone else do the talking for us.
That said, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world regardless. I can go to see whatever movie I want, when I want. I can skip work if I really want to. I won't be forced to compete in the Olympics or be a farmer. I don't drive a cart pulled by a donkey to the market which is actually only a series of canopies strown over a dusty street. Everyone in the street isn't strapped up with AK's. I'm not unpatriotic in my views. I just feel like the definition of freedom has become just as useless as the dollar bill.
Rant rant rant rant....

Flame on.

But you can apply the same scenario to pot you do to abortion. I am in favor of the federal government banning neither but I think individual states have the right to.
I am a strong 10th amendment kinda guy. The reason I usually oppose the democrats is they basically ignore it. Unfortunatly Good Republicans like Lazio, Watts, Largent, Gingrich etc. who came in as part of the Republican revolution didn't stick around for whatever reason and the Republican party has since tried to out Democrat the Democrats.
Here's a rich one. The federal government uses the interstate commerce clause to regulate drugs. If I plant seeds in Colorado to grow pot I smoke in Colorado who did I effect interstate commerce
I think it is incredibly stupid to even try drugs because you never know until you do if you are one of those who easily become dependant on them. But seeing as how the illegal drug trade adversely affects innocents worse than the drug use itself I think Weed should be legal. Continued disussion on that matter is best left to another time and place.

The largest world oil fields is in Saudi Arabia and has about 80B barrels... So perhaps your #'s are only about 800 million.. The top three fields are also in decline... which means prices will increase... and the little bit we can pump out will not cover the decline
btw even if you disregard the green river basin and that potential, you are still talking about 1.2 billion barrels of oil in anwar the dakotas and the shelf. That is more than saudi...

See, here it is yet again. This argument basically is that since Obama is a black man he must be the best candidate. How absurd and racist is that?

I don't think that's the way the comment was meant at all.
I believe what he's getting at is that there are still plenty of old-fashioned bigots out there that will vote for the white guy simply because he is white. And there will in fact be plenty of those type people because that's a part of the world we live in still today.
Maybe McCain is the better of the two, but he WILL get some votes specifically because he's white, not because he is the better candidate (and we all know by now I'm not a fan of McCain). And I'm sure Obama will get some votes specifically because he's black.
As a cracker, I'd love to see a black man in office. I think it would be another great step toward breaking down barriers, and give the NAACP less room to complain about how they think this country is still repressing the "African American" race. I think the image alone Obama would represent to other countries is that America truly is a land of opportunity for people of all kinds. I would like to have a woman president someday for the same reason. But I'm glad it won't be THAT woman.

And I read it as the only reason obama is in this race is because he is black. Or else he'd be well where Edwards is tabloid fodder. (that is actually true) The national enquirer couldn't make some of the stuff up that Obama and his surrogates have said.
Imagine these headlines.
Air up your tires and you'll save more gas than we can drill.
Obama's lifelong pastor calls us troops terrorist.
lol

The racism thing works both ways. I don't think it will matter all that much in the end results. The race will be close because it is a bad year to run as a Republican and Obama has a very poor resume.

about 90% of blacks voted for Obama over Clinton. Plenty of racism among blacks as well.
I agree about electing a black president (Just not this one). That will heal some old wounds.
Remember a couple years ago when the superbowl buzz was the possibility of a black coach winning, and then it came down to which black coach was going to win? I got so sick and tired of hearing about that crap but now that the genie is out of the bottle we wont have to listen to that again.
I just hope McCain doesn't win a close election. We will never hear the end of it.
