Just picked up my 450 gallon!!

Gotta tell you crimzy, I have been a long time reader of this post. I thought I would finally post, for a bump, gotta show the love. Amazing tank, makes me want to buy a different house that can support a 400gallon. If only my wife was more understanding.

    Grounded Plugs

What about adding an inline GFCI. I got mine online for $15. This would add the safety into any appliances that run near water.

Help! Top brace of tank broke

Good story with a happy ending!! My 55g had the same thing happen. Though I know why my center brace broke. For some reason I tried to lift the tank from the brace, and it cracked. Didnt think it was a big deal, untill I filled it. The brace finally broke apart, and it immediately bowed out...

    refugium question...good water or bad?

I like crazy! On a side note, in the sump where does evaporation occur? Or technically, where would I see the water level drop? The lowest point in the sump?

    refugium question...good water or bad?

Thanks for the input. I have filters caps for bulkheads which I will cover with some sort of filter media, this is all I have planned for stopping big waste to enter fuge/sump. So as far as the inlet to the fuge coming straight from the DT, it is in popular opinion an "ok" idea?

    refugium question...good water or bad?

I am worried about excess waste in the fuge, but i do plan to have a Clean up crew in there. I would put a valve right before the inlet to fuge, to control fuge flow.

    refugium question...good water or bad?

I am plumbing my fuge, and it will be seperate from sump. My first thought was to have the water come straight from DT, but I have read that some think its bad idea. Instead they opt to feed fuge from a tee off the return. I would like opinions on which you would chose and why... Thanks in...

    Water flow help...my first Sump/Fuge

My tank is tempered glass on all sides...BIG sticker on the bottom Thought about buying a new tank, but the ones at the LFS dont say if they are tempered or not. Nor does anyone working there. My LFS is so unreliable, good thing I have these forums. I bought a bunch of acrylic today, I am...

    Water flow help...my first Sump/Fuge

Very nice! I'm also starting to have fun with the diy stuff, great time killer. I was originally going to go U-tube, but from the reading I was doing the box seemed safer. Have you ever lost siphon on the tubes? I couldn't find any boxes at the LFSs here, are they lee's specimen? I would...

    Water flow help...my first Sump/Fuge

For what its worth, I have two koralia 1s at 400gph each in the DT now. On a side note I decided to make a diy overflow from melevsreef idea, but I want to put 2 drains off the back of the over flow, mainly for redundancy. I want this to be as fool proof as possible, with out drillingmy tank...

    Water flow help...my first Sump/Fuge

The overflow is actually an acrylic box, no tubes, but same principle. Rated at 1600gph. I will attatch a tube at te top of the box connected to a powerhead to continuosly pull any air that might accumulate. Yes fuge drain will be gravity fed to sump, the flow rate will be whatever i have...

    building a sump...

That is close to what I am setting up, but do to limited space, my fuge will be seperate from the sump tank. It looks like this, with a valve on the pvc right before it enters the fuge, to control flow in fuge. Forgive my poor sketch Thoughts?

Setting up a fuge...Is my idea a good idea??

Maybe I misunderstood the OP. But I thought he already had a sump set up, and he wanted to add a remote fuge in a 20g size. If there is no fuge currently, wouldn't anything be better than nothing? I agree bigger is better, but if space is a concern then 20g fuge is better than no fuge, right...

Setting up a fuge...Is my idea a good idea??

I meant the word in its meaning "refuge", classic might not been right word. A safe haven or quiet zone for shrimp, snails, copepods, amphipods, or any denizens that would normally not live/thrive in the DT circle of life. IMO 20g would be a sufficient space for this appliation.

    My 75 gallon story...so far.

IMO everyone that has been in the hobby for a while ends up either having/wanting plumbed sump/fuge. I bought everything to go HOB when I first set started, thinking I dont mind HOB. Wrong. I just couldn't take all that junk on the back. You also have SOO many more options once you plumb it...

Setting up a fuge...Is my idea a good idea??

It all depends on what you are using the fuge for...If you are relying on it to reduce trates, ect than it is too small. But, if you are using it for the classic reason of a refugium for macro algea and pods, then 20 gal will be plenty.
