I've had a few bad experiences with ATO's, so now I just use a digital timer. It takes a couple of days to get the setting just right but once you do you don't have to worry about anything going wrong.

Tough call, nothing worse than watching a fish get picked on. If it were me, I'd return the firefish to the lfs, just to be safe. Two clowns in a small tank are going to be VERY territorial. You could wait and see what happens but you run the risk of waking up and finding the little guy dead.
