    Older Tank... Reseal?

I'm moving a 90 gallon tank in a couple of weeks, it's been sitting in my fathers house for almost 10 years or so. He's been using the mag-scrub type algae scrubbers on the glass, and the edges of the silicon in the corners are kind of rough because if it. I've seen this same thing on a bunch of...

    New Hobbyist: 20 Gallon?

Depends on the community. Some forums are snobby about things, other forums are snobby about another. I'm still trying to decide what you guys are snobby about. :)

    Lighting / Canopy Advice

I keep seeing people say "chinese box" but no one ever says what the things are actually called. Are we afraid of saying the name or something? I mean, what you say sounds appealing but googling "chinese box" just lands me in a really trashy part of town. :)

    Lighting / Canopy Advice

Will be going with reef safe fish and inverts with the intentions to move into softs at some point, if I ever move into anything more advanced I'll buy a second fixture.

    Lighting / Canopy Advice

90 Gallon Tank and I'm looking at the Current Orbit Marine LED's 36"-48" but I also see that they sell a 48"-60". Does anyone have these lights in a 48" canopy? Which one did you go for? the 46-48 or 48-60? I think I'm mostly concerned with the fit, but also interested in the lighting...

    Typical new person here

Looks like red hair algae... pretty much any clean up crew will eat this stuff. Crabs, snails, especially turbos. Any species of "rock picking" fish, herbivores, etc... Most likely have a spike in nitrates if you're seeing this stuff pop up. It's not harmful, but it can cover and starve out...

finally taking the great mandarin jump

Absolutely beautiful fish, good job on the tank too, from what I can see everyone looks healthy and social.

Forgot about that... around here we have access to a lot of tonga and fiji rock. Tonga seems to be heavier and smaller.

    what fish is this?

Hello, Voice of the community here. On behalf of the community: "ARGH!" I used to be that guy that just walked into the store and bought a fish because it looked cool. Wasted a lot of money and life.

Keep adding rock. Rule I always follow is at least 1lb per gallon.

    Keeping Eels

That is what I was looking for. I'm not going down the Eel road if I have to completely seal the tank up. I'm always struggling with my tanks getting too hot. Oh well, on to my next passing obsession.

Biocube 29, and need advice getting started.

Nice, looking good. You're right about the Dragonet but you're on track with the tisbe, just keep a close eye on his eating habits and you should be fine. Keep in mind most dragonets die of starvation, but also keep in mind that they really are pretty hardy.

    Keeping Eels

I've kept a lot of varied species over the years but I have never kept an Eel. Well, I'm going to be setting up a FOWLR soon and I'm considering a snowflake Eel. I'm not all that familiar with their attitudes toward other fish. Are they aggressive toward smaller fish all the time, hit or miss...

finally taking the great mandarin jump

Love them. I just wrote another post on the new hobbyist forums to someone who is considering getting one. I have one that is about 10 years old, I have to move the tank he's in soon and my biggest fear is killing him, and/or the ecosystem that is sustaining him. You'll do fine with him...

    Dragonet food?

Pods is short for copepods. I seeded and grew my population of pods until I saw them collecting them in my filter sock. Then I would just collect them in a small glass container from my kitchen and dump them back in the display tank. Basically, once you start seeing them collect in your...

New fish are dying...can't figure it out.

Aggression. That tang is slicing up folks when you're not looking. 36 gallon + blue tang = that entire tank is "his" home. Edit: You could double the size of that tank and it wouldn't be enough room for that tang. Remember there are many reasons why a best practice on tank size is defined...

    Dragonet food?

I think where Jay's experience and mine differ is that he likely started feeding brine and mysis to his dragonet early on. Where as I spent a lot of time on the back end trying to seed my tank and kind of never went out of my way to feed the guy. So there you have it, two totally different...

New tank is up and running

You're good with the cover you have. I've never seen a firefish "take aim" and jump in any specific direction. The square "egg crate" type tops are good for tanks that are prone to be a little warm. It provides a bit of "jumper security" so to speak, but probably not a good idea for the fire...
