Scrub off the nasty dead-looking stuff, and give them a good shaking in a bucket of saltwater. The bacteria located on the rock WILL INDEED assist your tank in cycling.

Thanks - that's the hope! I thought about adding some of that PurpleUp stuff. I have heard mixed things about it, but it is supposed to work great according to the LFS.

Tank has been up and running for about 3 weeks. The LR helped to cycle the tank quickly along with the live sand. By stock lighting I mean the 40 watt light fixture that came with the tank.

It's not that expensive for a 20lb bag, but I would buy CaribSea AragAlive. They don't culture it, it comes directly from the ocean and it even has things like shells, etc in it making for a more realistic substrate. But what do I know? I've been doing this since xmas! :notsure:
