Crushed Coral and LS substrate mix. Am I Doomed to High Nitrates?

Howdy, Not too long ago I posted about how my nitrates were at about 160 ppm. Since then, I've been doing tons of water changes, as well as swapped out my 2 Maxi-Jet 600's with Hydor Flo's with two Maxi-Jet 1200's now and their almost down to 0 ppm now. Yay! Anyway, some folks on here were...

Lionfish in a Reef Tank? Is it possible?

Howdy, I think I'm almost ready to start getting my reef tank going. Right now I have a 46 gallon FOWLR tank that's been set up for a couple years. I'd really love to get a Lionfish, even if it means getting rid of all my other fish. But I'm concerned about the compatibility in a reef tank...

Good Lighting Schedule for Reef Tank?

Howdy, I just got my 192 watt power compacts for my 46 bow. I have one 96 watt daylight and one 96 watt actinic. What's a good schedule in terms of lighting over the course of the day for a reef tank? Right now, it's only a FOWLR but now that I have lighting, I want to get some anemones. Any...

    Nitrates Really High/Canister Filter Question...

Thanks Scott for the tips. As far as I know, the guy that had the tank before me always had a LS/CC mix. I didn't take the best care of it though, so I wouldn't be surprised if high nitrates went unnoticed. He says they've never gotten high though... I've called every place in the phone book...

    Nitrates Really High/Canister Filter Question...

If I get a sand such as "Southdown" am I going the wrong route? I'm one quite a budget (broke college kid...) and I'd much prefer not to have to spend the extra on true LS. What are the downsides to getting something like Southdown? Thanks!

    Nitrates Really High/Canister Filter Question...

I have about 3/4 crushed coral and 1/4 live sand (the live sand it about 2 years old or so) I took over the tank from a coworked about 3 months ago I think he has had it about 2-3 years prior. The rest of the tank readings are fine and dandy. I probably have at LEAST 10 hermit crabs...

    Nitrates Really High/Canister Filter Question...

Howdy, I've been having trouble with my Nitrates as of late. I have a 46 gallon tank with a Coralife Skimmer, Emperor 280, and tons of live rock. I also have two Maxi-jet 600's on either side of the tank attached to Hydor Flo water deflectors. My Nitrates are between 80 and 160 PPM! I've read a...

Emperor 280- Should I Remove Biowheel?

Howdy, I've got a 46 gallon tank which atm only has fish, inverts and live rock & sand. I was told by someone that I should remove the biowheel in my Emperor 280, calling them "Nitrate factories." My Nitrates are testing fine though. Any tips are appreciated! -Bobby

Can I Clean Skimmer's Collection Cup?

Hi, I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to clean the inside of the collection cup on a Coralife Super Skimmer? It gets a nasty green film on the inside. Will wiping this out affect the performance of my skimmer? Thanks, Capnbob

    PLZ Help Identify Mystery Algae

Howdy, I'm new to this forum. I've got a 46 gallon take that I've had for about a month now that I took over for a friend that had it for a couple of years. So I'm still pretty new to saltwater scene... I've got a couple different types of algae growing in my tank that I can't identify. I'd...
