Can't get rid of this stuff!!

I have a bunch of free floating debris in my tank that I can't seem to filter out to save my life! I've put a filter sock over the output of the overflow and added a few pads into my sump but this stuff doesn't seem to go away. It's been going on for a few months now. It really detracts from the...

    Tank cycle question. Time frame.

Sounds like you are on your way. Unfortunately every tank is different and an exact time frame is impossible to give. Cycles on my tanks have taken about 4-6 weeks.

    rock/lighting question

Your tank should be fine without lights for a while. The fish might get weird though, do you have a NO light (like that came with the tank) or something to make due? It doesn't have to be a very high wattage.

1st fish died  questions why?

I agree with Birdy. I was curious as to the ammonia spike. From the experience (limited to starting two tanks) I have had the ammonia spiked much higher than that. Of course I used LR to cycle and the ammonia goes through the roof... but 1.5 still seems on the low end of the spectrum to me. Just...

    Tap Water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to live in a place where the tap water would most likely kill you if you drank it. I think our tap water is OK to drink :hilarious hee hee hee.... plenty of plant life :) I wonder if we just ran the water over some macro's in that 3rd world country if we could have drunk the water.

quick q that i never really got an answer for

Tap is OK to use as long as you set your deck on fire and use it to put the fire out. IMO RO/DI is the best way to go. $100.00 for an RO/DI unit and you have an endless supply of nice pure lab grade (almost) water to use on your tank. Of all the things that could go wrong why deal with it? Cheers!

    Tank cycle question. Time frame.

What type of filtration are you using? Agreed with above, you're gonna need something to keep that bio-filter going.

    My Clown Died

Sometimes, I hate to say, it just happens :( I had a perc for three months with good water quality and he up and died one night. Everyone else in the tank was fine and is still alive a year later. I never did figure out what happened to the poor little guy.

    new live rock

IMO it is best to not risk it. I ordered 'pre-cured' LR and used it to cycle my first 44, let me tell you if there had been fish in that thing when I put the rock in they would not have lasted long. Ammonia off the charts for 5 days and it stunk to high heaven. That LR is 'pre-cured' can be...

    new live rock

You should cure that rock prior to putting it in your tank. Run out to Walmart, get a 10 gallon container, fill it with some saltwater, put a powerhead and a heater in it and wait until the Ammonia gets to 0, change out the water in the rubbermaid and test the water until it is ready to put in...

    RO or purified drinking water?

To throw in my .02, the RO/DI filter was the best investment I made. I didn't really want to lug 75 gallons of water home from the grocery store the first time, then 10 or so per week for water changes and top offs... the 150.00 i spent on the RO/DI filter saved me who knows how much in time...

5 gal paint buckets w/ water tight lids (you know those white ones you get at Home Depot). Has worked well for me.

What dry tab test strips do you use? I've been wary to try them for fear of inaccuracy.

    Short light, long tank?

MH Power Compact? That would say to me that it is a fixture with a mixture of both MH and PC bulbs. Different types of bulbs that are typically mixed together. I've never seen a 5 foot long MH bulb, although that would be pretty cool. :) A MH fixture is going to need to be far above the water to...
