    Our first Saltwater tank!

O definately agree about the waiting thing, I dont have any money right now anyway (it cost me a fortune to get this thing going!) so it will be along time before I start adding anything beyond the 3 green chromis I plan to add when my nitrites finally go down to zero. They are currently at .3...

    Our first Saltwater tank!

Thanks, we want a reef tank, but at present we have 50/50 compact flourescents so Im not sure how that will work. Soft corals and mushrooms at first maybe, and lots of neat inverts. I would like to have a clown and anemone but Im not sure how it would do with those lights. May have to wait on...

white dots all over tank glass

That is sooo funny! Not the styrofoam in the tank, but the fact that we never assumed that was what it might be

    I have flow!!!

I am 5 weeks in and have asked the same question. I was told NOT to do a water change until all your ammonia and nitrites are at 0 and your trates are steadily decreasing. This is so the beneficial bacteria has a chance to build up. If you change your water it may improve your readings, but...

    Snail eggs

Ahh I stand corrected. What I bought as "nassarius" snails are actually mud snails. But I am still wondering wether the offspring will survive to adulthood.

white dots all over tank glass

Not all snails lay eggs in pretty patterns, some are directionally challeged and lay them randomly all over the place. (mine for instance) lol

white dots all over tank glass

do they move? If not they might be snail eggs, I have those everywhere. get a magnifying glass and have a closer look. Youll probably know right away what they are then.

    Algae ID please

The tap water is probably the culprit. take your water (tap) to the lfs and have them test it for you. It could be loaded with phosphates/silica etc. and worse it could contain copper which will kill all invertebrates. I would top off with RO personally. Its just not worth the risk. Even...

    Hydor Koralias??

I have a 58gallon tank, which is the same foot print as you tank and I have 2 hydor 1's (they each have 400gph) and a seaclone 100 and emperor 400. It seems to work just fine (although I am having algae issues on my sand and probably need a nano down there to keep that down) I second what nova...

    New Here- Id please

Also, you should have about a pound and a half of LR per gallon so that means you need like 55lbs of rock. I would get at least 37 lbs. Its biological filtration and its pretty anyway so why not?

    New Here- Id please

fill a siringe with boiling water and squirt it as close as you can to the anemone. They should shrivel and die then. I havent done it, but I hear it works great and if you use water from your tank it doesnt harm anything else

    Algae ID please

It will prob die off on its own when it eats all the nutrients in the water. Your tank is still new and so still nutrient rich. My tank is also 5 weeks and I have had similar algae outbreaks. Are you using tap water or RO to top it off? Because tap can sometimes have phosphates etc. that...
