Not all snails lay eggs in pretty patterns, some are directionally challeged and lay them randomly all over the place. (mine for instance) lol

The tap water is probably the culprit. take your water (tap) to the lfs and have them test it for you. It could be loaded with phosphates/silica etc. and worse it could contain copper which will kill all invertebrates. I would top off with RO personally. Its just not worth the risk. Even...
