    If you have shrimp or picky fish they will rob most corals before they have a chance to digest it. I have to swat at my cleaner shrimp and peppermint shrimp to keep them from stealing the coral's food!

    In addition to what Stanlalee said, I have also read a much larger success rate in mature skimmerless tanks. Skimmers pull out what little phytoplankton and zooplankton that is produced in our tanks in addition to unwanted dissolved organics.

    The ceramic rings are the equivalent of live rock rubble. You can take them out or leave them in, it is up to you. I think you'd be fine with just leaving the carbon and rings in there and changing the carbon once a month or so when you clean all of the gunk out in there.
