    Opinion on purchase

thanks for all the replies folks! It seems the resounding opinion is "buy the rock" first... so that is what I will do. I was pretty much leaning towards that option in the first place. The MH ballast will only be 1.5 to 2 weeks after my rock... The tank will take at least that long to cycle...

    protein skimmer

I've got the SeaClone 100 on my 44 and when I first had it setup I loved it. The water was consistently cloudy even with water changes every week. After I put the skimmer on it cleared up in six hours. IMO - Get one... the SeaClone is available on-line for about $50-60... but I've heard good...

    Opinion on purchase

I'm in the process of rebuilding my tank and would like an opinion from the members of this board. My paychecks come at two week intervals and I can't afford to buy everything all at once (I know I am not alone here). Should I: a) Buy my 45 pounds of live rock b) Purchase my first (of two) 125...

Replacing CC w DSB or LS

angelofdeath- If you have an undergravel filter I would recommend taking your fish out during the operation. You will have a significant amount of detrius in your CC and under your UGF... vaccum it before taking it out and you should not notice any serious change in your levels. Just a...

Replacing CC w DSB or LS

Angelofdeath - I believe it depends on how long your tank has been up. If it is well established I would move your fish out into a Q-Tank before you remove the CC... all the gunk that gets kicked up could have adverse effects on your fish. Keep them in the QT until your levels stabilize and you...

Replacing CC w DSB or LS

Just curious: What size tank do you have? BTW - Sand is the way to go.

    CC->DSB switch

mine took approximately 10 days to clear... but that was without any sort of biological activity at all. In an established tank stuff should start to stick to the sand right away and pull it back down to the bottom. HTH Cheers.

    Removing ugf

I would be very careful taking out the UGF. If I'm not mistaken you could kick up lots of junk that would not be very good for your fishes. Also, when I took my UGF out it was a gigantic mess so be prepared... since your tank has only been up 3 weeks it shouldn't be that bad (mine was up for...

    Southdown

I am setting up my tank with SouthDown and I did not rinse the sand first... if you are just planning on dumping it in there be prepared for a ton of clouding, mine did not clear up for 10 days (you can see pics of it on my less-than-professional website)! One suggestion I saw was to put the...

    I will start over

Don't feel too bad I had to start my tank over again, I lost about $100 worth of livestock due to a crash... its a slow and costly process, but use what you've learned from your mistakes and you should do fine  Remember: patience patience patience Good luck.

Adding liverock and Sand in established tank

I found that using a PVC pipe to get the sand to the bottom works really well. Just put a funnel in the top and pour the sand slowly through the tube to the bottom. I used this method to add sand to my setup (after it cleared up from the initial 100lbs of sand I dumped in there!) and it worked...

    Sand problems?

thanks for the replies stpabr - I live in Columbia, and that was one heck of a snow storm.. where do you shop (lfs)?? I don't have my powerheads running but my canister and skimmer are both running. I did use playsand (southdown) and 1 lb of established sand from another tank. You think the...

    Sand problems?

Yeah I did rinse it... but maybe I didn't do a good enough job? Do you think I should drain the tank and rinse the sand again? I don't have any live stock in the tank so it is no big deal (although there is $10 worth of salt in there :D ).

    Sand problems?

I've read that tanks get sloppy after adding sand to them... most have said that their 'milk' clears up after a few days. It doesn't look like mine has changed at all... still the same mess it was 4 days ago... any ideas? You can see what it looks like if you click on the web link (just started...

    Tank Recomendations

Just put 100lbs of Southdown sand in (boy is it cloudy), and was hoping for an opinion: I currently only have 30watts of flo lighting and know I need to upgrade. Should I do that now or get live rock first and cycle the tank? I have to wait between paychecks to do anything so if I can start to...

    Tapwater filter from Aquar. Pharm.

I just bought one of these as well and am hoping someone out there knows what the deal is with this thing! I am setting up a new tank and do NOT have the money to invest in a "real" RO/DI unit and no place around me sells RO water.... so I am kinda up a creek. I hope the thing is benificial. I...

External Hang on skimmer or Sump

I've got the SeaClone and on my old setup it worked great... though there are much better skimmers out there for the $$$ it is the best I think. As a side note I bought a Prizm and returned it within an hour.. way loud IMO. Hope that helps Cheers.
