I think you have to consider how much LR you currently have in the tank v. how much you bought too .. MAYBE the LR you bought is already cycled? Could be ..

I've even seen ppl sell these things to help 'jump start' tanks that don't have them ...

I disagree. I always run at least a 'little' carbon in my tank, it helps mine stay nice and crisp! =)
