Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

Maybe try not readjusting it every time? Sometimes its low because there isn't much DOC and then other times there is too much? Have you been using any chemicals or anything in the tank? been using any epoxy putty or any smoke or chemicals being used around the tank?

How often do I run my protein skimmer

An alternative to skimming is an algae scrubber, but even then proper water changes would have to happen because even hair algae pull out trace elements that need to be replaced by regular water changes. I really do think that coralline needs more than just calcium in order to grow - and for...

You know your a fishkeeper when you tell your realtor you don't like the house because there is no where to put a big fish tank. You know your a fish keeper when the first thing you do when you walk into a house is picking out the best spot to put a fish tank. You know your a fish keeper when...

    Refugium lighting questions.

I think it's because your system is nutrient deficient though. It's not a bad batch, it's simply because there is no fertilizer.

    LED vs. T5HO

Cool, but I think the mods might take down the link in a minute. I saw it though. Not a bad price. I think though that I will stick with the LEDs that I want to purchase.

How often do I run my protein skimmer

One of my pretty tanks had a refugium only and tons of coral. The problem I had was that nitrate and phosphate was relatively high and as a result, coralline and SPS corals had a very low growth rate. As you can see in the video, even though the tank is nine years old, it doesn't have much...

Protein Skimming: What, Why and When

I prefer needle wheels or the new pin wheels like on DC skimmers. It's a personal preference. Less wattage, more skimmate. I wish I went with the Skimz monzter mini SN143 instead of the 123. But the 123 is still a beast.

    LED vs. T5HO

Yeah, I found that after I posted. That would be ok for a bigger tank but not for mine. I honestly can't wait until I can buy my LEDs again.

    New 75g Reef Tank

The 20g quarantine is now up and running. I put a filter from the emperor 400 in the main tank so it would get some bacteria on it overnight. I'll be finding some large PVC pieces at work today for hiding spots and hopefully I'll be able to catch him. I'll go get some better food stuffs and...

    New 75g Reef Tank

My angelfish has popeye or some kind of fungal infection. I'm setting up a quarantine and getting some medicine and something to help with any ammonia produced from the fish in the water. I'm also going to buy a variety of foods for him to munch on so that I might be able to get him through...

    Angelfish with popeye?

Hey yall I got this angelfish in my tank last Wednesday. I have seen him eat these new life spectrum pellets with garlic pretty good. Today I came home and noticed that one of his eye looks a little white and fuzzy and its kind of bulging a little. I'm thinking that it could be some kind of...

    New 75g Reef Tank

Despite the hair algae hanging on by a thread, I'm glad to see that coralline is already growing and spreading. It's kind of like a measuring stick - something I can look at to measure the health of the system. I'll be hooking up the kalk stirrer tonight, since I will have a little time.

    New 75g Reef Tank

The first flecks of coralline is starting to grow on the plastic stuff in the tank. I'm picking up a few hermits and a skunk cleaner shrimp later this week. Saturday I'll be picking up my two tangs I purhased last week. Hopefully the LFS has been getting them to eat prepared foods. Since the...

new to the saltwater hobby and have a million questions

Flower did a good job of explaining a lot of it. Here's a guide that can help you more with a lot more information on some of your questions. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/index.php?threads/guides-for-new-hobbyists.388776/ I suggest going ahead and buying a refractometer, a reverse osmosis...
