    Anyone know what this is?

Typically they grow to a certain size and then during the next full moon at midnight they will escape the tank and look for a host to lay their eggs in. I hear it's very unpleasant.

Can anyone tell me what these are?

Is there a convenient way to increase the waterflow over them?

Can anyone tell me what these are?

I agree they are some type of Zooanthid. Perhaps Protopalythoa? Can't tell until they open up. How much waterflow are they getting?

    Filtration Options

The filter you are considering will remove particulate matter. Your skimmer removes dissolved organic compounds (DOCs). DOCs are the result of the breakdown of organic waste. The type of waste your new filter will break down into DOCs. This material cannot be removed by a filter pad or...

First SPS trial was a success...

Don't give up too quickly on corals that look dead or dying. Sometimes a group of polyps can seem to be dead and suddenly resurrect themselves. Frag off the live piece and you can still grow out the coral. I'm not saying it always happens but it's not uncommon at all.

    Sick Blonde Naso

So sorry for your loss Randy. Have you run any carbon?

you ever think about just getting out of it?

Yes, you can run a reef on a shoestring budget but I have yet to see one I would be willing to display in my living room. Sure, there are ways to save some money here and there but in general if you skimp on the important things you're not going to have a good looking, stress free tank.

    First molt-just had to share!

The hardened area are the only areas containing any Calcium carbonate. I'm pretty sure they are after protein if they eat their molt. Based on the amount of sand in their gut they have no problem getting enough Calcium in the typical reef. One thing the molt does have is contaminants. Shrimp...

help me with equipment in my nano please!

A couple thoughts: A fan just blowing on the tank will take heat away from the tank. If you can get some airflow over the water surface some way that's even better. You can't get waterflow without adding heat. It's the first law of thermodynamics that you just can't get around. If you have...

    Anyone know what this is?

    I believe it's a Colonial Tunicate colony.

And you think i would learn

Not sure which one you mean. Here's one from my drive home after work in January a couple months ago. The sign reads "10% Grade next 3 miles". When it's like this the only way to know where the road is in most places is to follow the telephone poles. This is why I don't trust all-season...

Typical Western NY landscape to tell the truth. I'm sure Jay can confirm. Here's another picture from one of my favorite local hiking trails.

    Clownfish chasing the new clown

This is my understanding as well but the timing is significantly different between the species. Maroons are the worst to try to pair because they change to female so young and quickly for example. They change so fast that if you have a bonded pair and the female dies or is removed you cannot...

    Clownfish chasing the new clown

Clarkii and Maroons determine gender quickly if they are left alone for even just a few days or if they are dominant within their brood. The smaller Clownfish in the video looks to be a lot older than just a few months. Did you get it directly from the breeder?

    Clownfish chasing the new clown

In my opinion, the small Clarkii isn't a juvenile. It's a young female in a tank with a larger female. The end result of this is nearly always one lone female picking at the dead remains of a smaller female.
