Skimmers and Filter Socks in Reef Tanks

For some reason live phytoplankton is able to avoid being trapped by the skimmer bubbles. Unfortunately most of us feed dead phyto which will get skimmed out. Filter socks are not fine enough to trap phytoplankton, dead or alive.

    hitchhikers in sand ?

The white crowned featherdusters are quite common and harmless. In a reef tank with no mechanical filtration they can sometimes overpopulate. They're easy to remove though so not something to worry about.

adding of sand, live rock and water

I agree with Flower. I would add, use dry sand for the initial cycle. It's much less expensive and as long as you have some live rock the bacteria will colonize on it rapidly. Don't despair if your tank is cloudy for a week or so. The suspended sediment will settle once the bacteria colonize...

    Macro Algae

If you are harvesting (pruning) every week and skip a week nothing bad will happen. It typically takes months for Caulerpa to get to the point of going sexual (sporulation). Trimming back a little extra prior to a vacation isn't a bad idea either.

    Macro Algae

Macro Algae will also reduce PO4 levels so it does double duty. Do you know what species of Caulerpa are available? If you keep it pruned it's unlikely to sporulate. But you are right, you need to keep an eye on it. It will give you a days warning when parts start to turn mottled and if you...

    Instant Death, Why?

I agree that Ammonia didn't kill your fish. the 0.1ppm was probably from the dead fish themselves. I can't think of any explanation.

That sounds like a good alternative if that price is common. Where is all the excess Sulphur going? What are you using for Carbonate?

    ID Please

:p There's no official common name for all the varieties of Protopalythoa or Zoanthids. If you don't like a name just come up with a better name of your own.
