DO NOT DO as Meowzer did :(

With all due respect to you my love (Lois) it seems this thread started out as something designed to tell people to QT new fish and or to find out what may have killed your fish. It then morphed into a thread on how to start up a QT. now let me get on my soap box. Starting up a QT is nothing...

If you had a lot of organic material in the sand it would have broken down and feed nitrifying bacteria converting it. it would have not just remained as such and started braking down when you added the sand to the QT. I do believe Beth may have something when she referenced the filter pad. Was...

You need to have a definitive answer as to the state of your bio filtration not guesses. IMO add a definite organic (small piece of shrimp) let it rot and test. The goby seems to have out lasted whatever the cause of the death of the other fish so no need to rush the QT

Lois for the third time did you or did you not add any food or raw shrimp to the tank

Quote: Sand and rock are the primary source of bio- dinitrification not necessarily nitrification. That is accomplished were ever the nitrifying bacteria find the most opportunistic place to colonize. But Lois has other issues to address. If she is not getting any organic brake down why is she...

Lois first you need to understand that I may not be the most intelligent hobbyist on the site BUT I will never knowingly tell you to do something to harm your tank inhabitance. Now let’s start from the beginning. You set up a HT added saltwater and sand from your established tank. if that is...

Renee first things first please tell me you have fishnets on and a particle mask (sorry Greg I had to ask) now you know Renee I have very few moments of clarity. So perhaps when she said “hypo will kill ich on the fish and/or on the sand, or wherever it is” I should have known that that is NOT...

Obviously if we have killed the entire ick parasite there cannot be cross contamination. It is when we are transferring water from one tank to another and the parasites is still present that using the same pump can be detrimental

What I would do is introduce some organics for brake down and test for nitrification. Get some PRIME so you can deal with ammonia and or nitrites as you build your bio filtration. Now you have to decide if you rather take the chance with what killed your other fish and leave the goby in the DT...

You Quote” I recommend using the live sand because that sand has biological colonies on it which will help to kick start the bio filter “ How can we be sure without a microscopic evaluation of the sand that there are any colonies of nitrifying bacteria on the sand? So this is an opinion and not...
