HI, Yes you def need to keep an eye on your Calcium and magnesium.Phosphate is 100% needed with coral care. High phosphate inhibits growth and colour. I use Salifert for all test except I use the Hanna Egg for phosphates. I keep these Mag 1280-1300 AlK 9.3 Cal 440 (3 clams and coraline uses...

Sick corals to healthy corals !

NO magic touch. Just good water parameters, 10% water changed every 21 days, stir sand bed & turkey baste rocks once a week to help feed the corals. And use Seachem Trace and Plus twice a week each as directed. I do overfeed my tank, so the corals not only get heaps of left overs at feed-time...

Sick corals to healthy corals !

I don't have one book on reefing.....ooops !! I walk into lfs, see a coral, quickly google it make sure its not in the dendro family and buy it. I then tank my chances. In the beginning I had to often move the dam things around until I saw some polyp extension or growth because they really are...

Sick corals to healthy corals !

some more. The last photo of the plate corals. We bought them when they were bleached so badly, they looked like skeletons, no colour at all. We picked them up for $5.00 each, because they were not supposed to come back, they are now all healthy and we could sell for $49.00 each, but we love...

Sick corals to healthy corals !

Ok, so here in Aussie we pay a lot for corals. They are the most expensive thing we put in our tanks, so hubby and I have sort of got into the habit of buying sick looking corals, haggling the price down and taking our chances. In most cases it seem to work and they make a good recovery. We have...

Yeah we've had him for about a year now. He eats anything you put in the tank including the nori clips for the tangs, But he does spend a great deal of the day also picking and pecking the tangs. They line up at night and first thing in the morning for him. I wouldn't be without one.

All new additions doing great !

corals aren't that hard mate. If you can get your hands on nice healthy specimens and go from there its easy. We don't do anything special to keep them. We have fairly decent water parameters, we do dose alk cal and mag (still test weekly for all) keep nitrates 0.00.-.0.02 (but for LPS ) up to...

    Tangs & Seaweed

If they wont take the clip, get a small rock and rubberband some nori (seaweed) to it. Drop it to the bottom of the tank and they will eat it. They are sometimes a little nervous about coming to the glass when new. This way also let you put a couple of rocks in and you get less food aggression...

    How to lower the Temperature

We in here in aussie, are very used to heat waves. Last summer we had over 10 days of between 40-46 degrees. We all froze 2lt plastic coke bottles full or RODI water, and placed in return section of sump when things go too hot. We had 6 bottles that we would rotate, they do a pretty reasonable...

All new additions doing great !

HI, thank you. We had to sell the powder blues, they were extremely aggressive towards each other, We removed the aggressor immed & left just one in the tank. The remaining one turned nasty towards a number of the other new fish. So removed him as well. We found nice new homes for them both...

Only wish the powder blues had worked out, but it was not meant to be . They have both found great new homes, in tanks with...

    water changes

I have an RODI that can push out 52 gallons in about 16hrs. The biggest thing is the waste water is huge. We normally have the waste water going straight down the drain, we did a little experiment the other week, and collected the waste water while filling a barrel with RODI. The ratio was...

    New to using RO water

Good quality water is just one fraction of keeping healthy fish. Good bacteria , diet & nutrition, nitrates & phosphates , fish comparability. All these things contribute to a healthy tank. & thriving fish.

    Nitrate levels

We collect and use natural salt water for our tank, testing it before it goes in for a water change, Nitrates are always 0.00. if is good enough for the ocean and free fish then we should aim as low as possible for captive fish. Thats just my 2 cents worth.

    Nitrate levels

Look I don't know what Fish can physically tolerate in nitrates. I would think personally. 20ppm would be as high as I would like. I keep corals so nitrates obviously matter a lot more to me. & I keep them undetectable to. 0,02. I suppose if your fish are used to it & still living them it's ok...

    water changes

Agreed. water changes are important. I would look at your numbers and decide from there. Nitrates and phos particularly. Just remember that a sump will increase your water volume altogether so you will now be having to do a slightly larger amount to change any way. Your 10% will be more water...
