    What is a good refractometer

We have the cheaper one, and it is very accurate. We also have a swingarm piece'0's*** and a glass hydrometer. When we got the refractometer, we calibrated it and went to the LFS to check their water. They were using a swingarm!!! but they read the same. Our other 2 read .02 and .04 UNDER. Just...

How do I get water into a tank?

if you are using a sump, and are filling for the first time, just rig up your sump pump, otherwise, find a big powerhead (like a 900gph or better) that can pump the head you need. ("head" is the height you need to lift the water to get it in the tank.)

    Moving forward

I have not used the plenum myself, but have also read about trouble with them. No offense taken. Also i 1000% agree with the no soap, ever. You never can tell what is in it. I take the tank outside (if it's warm enough) and, depending on size, CAREFULLY stand it on end, or on it's side, and...

    Moving forward

Also, save the ug filter, it can be converted to a Jaubert Plenum.(do google search for that). We presently use a 22 gallon tote for a sump. No, it is not the same as a canister filter. Welcome to the wonderfully addictive world of saltwater addiction.

    Heater Temperature

Also, purchase GOOD heaters. I have tried several, and am using rena-cals. Also like ebo-jaegers.Just don't believe the temp indicator on them, one is set at 74 and the other at 72 and the tank maintains a nice 77f. What kind of pump are you using? A Little giant submersible will heat the water...

    Top Offs...

In addition, if you have a sump, you could install an auto top off system. Ours is DIY with a 2 gallon waterbottle feeding a slightly modified toilet innard. Get the one that has no metal parts inside, and replace the outer screws with nylon screws, or zip ties. I use a zip tie tool to tighten...

    How to lower Nitrates?

I have read and read, searched the archives and posts, and felt that I need to ask this. How do you lower nitrates? I have seen several different ideas on the subject, and would like to see them put together in one thread. Presently, we have 2 DIY coil denitrators on our 125, one has been up for...

Blenny..so cute, but an idiot of the fish.

Also have a lawnmower that is a character. Does he ever hammer at rocks, pieces fly off , but he is eating a lot of algae, just not where we want him to. It is cute how he "sits up". Also have a royal gramma that is NOT timid (can be a real B**ch) and flares at other fish like a betta does. P.S>...

You have it correct. SHould check salinity every day or two, depending on tank size and amout of top-off water. Use RO or steam distilled water for top-off. How big is your tank?
