    Tempeture

You'll probably hear different things on this one. I know I keep mine between 78 and 80, depending on if my lights are on or not

    can diatoms hurt anything?

I know we all see tons of questions about diatoms, but I didn't see an answer to how long on average people see diatoms in their tanks. Also, is it safe to continue to add new life to your tank while you have diatoms as long as your parameters look good?

    diatom outbreaks

I just wondered if some of you can tell me about how long your diatom outbreaks have lasted. I just finished cycling a new tank and added my cleanup crew. I use only RO water, and my parameters are ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 10 pH 8.2 temp 78-80

    coral banded shrimp

That's crazy!!! I have had two in two other tanks of mine and never had them eat a fish!!! Or crabs for that matter. They always just came out and ate during feeding time and were one of my favorite things two watch in the tank.

    When to add clean-up crew

Sorry forgot to answer your question. I don't believe the things you mentioned as a clean up crew would be enough at all. But, that's just my opinion

    When to add clean-up crew

I have a 55 and in it I have 3 emeralds, about 20 hermits, 10-15 snails, and 3 shrimp. You can try to do without if you want to give it a shot, but I've never heard of someone not having a sufficient cleanup crew. I would recommend a regular clean up crew, but if you feel strongly that you...

What are these lights good for?

odyssea bulbs. On the bulbs are the numbers... one bulb says daylight 65W 12,000K the other says actinic blue 65W I just wanted to make sure I remembered correctly and that these are good for soft corals and anemones except for carpet anemones. Is this right?

I left mine in for about 3 days.

    When to add clean-up crew

I love emerald crabs. They're really good at cleaning too. You should definitely get some snails though because they will help keep your rock and sand clean. Without them, your sand could easily become brown and become a trap for nitrates. The cleanup crew's purpose is to clean up leftover...

    Quick Ammonia Spike

No problem. The reason your ammonia spiked so quickly is because uncured rock is going to have a lot of die off while it's curing. Ammonia is the first thing that shows up when things die like that, hence why some people put in a raw shrimp to get a cycle going. I used uncured rock when I...

    Quick Ammonia Spike

I forgot to say that you're going to have die off from your rocks anyway, since they're curing right now in your tank. This means you don't have to worry about ammonia hurting them. You're still going to have the bacteria that makes your rocks live in there. You may lose a little life, but...

    Quick Ammonia Spike

I strongly disagree with the above advice, no disrespect at all. You just started cycling your tank and you've got an excellent start by using uncured rock. It will jumpstart your cycle for you. Test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Each of them will go up and then go back down to zero...

you can find them all over the internet. Just do a search. I found about 5 of them and compared prices before deciding on one.

    Algea/Diatom Problem

I hear that crushed coral can be a trap for nitrates. I've also heard of people who have it and don't have problems with it. In my opinion, I think it causes problems. Uneaten food, just for one example, can get caught below and cause nitrates. I started with cc and switched to ls after only...

    Remora skimmer

I've heard that remora skimmers are one of the best out there, but I have a coralife super skimmer that works great already, just got it yesterday and it also wasn't very expensive, about 85 with shipping

    Protein skimmer

I have asked this question in the past, and people say that it's fine to run it during the cycle.

to stir the sand or to not stir up the sand

Listen to alyssia, do not stir your sand bed! You will cause an ammonia spike and your livestock will be at risk. Just buy some snails that bury in the sand. I'm trying to remember what they're called, but do a search on keeping a sandbed clean and I'm sure you'll get some great ideas

    Nitrates too high?

This number is completely fine for your nitrates. I've had mine staying at 20 before and had fish and inverts in my tank. They'll be fine. It's good to try and get them down, but nothing to worry about, especially since you have nothing like corals and anemones in your tank yet, which require...
