Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

I don't have a big box store near me anyway. I've been doing some thinking. The reason I stopped using the 55 was because the center brace on the top frame broke. I just realized I could fix it. All I'd have to do to get the tank running is build a stand, get a sump, plumb it, and away I go. So...

Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

I've drilled tanks before, have no issues doing that. I'll certainly consider it. I was looking a the 40 breeder and I really like the dimensions. I just need to find one.

Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

What do you guys think of the two clowns, a sixline wrasse, and a flame angel in a 30 gallon? Too much?

Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

The pump and overflow were compatible, the siphon just broke on the overflow. I've been thinking about it more and will probably do a sump. The less equipment in the tank the better, especially on a smaller tank. I do have a koralia 750 which should work well for circulation. Might throw in a...

Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

I don't remember all the details about my equipment, I'll dig around tomorrow and see what I have. Unfortunately my old skimmer (some octopus model) is in sump only, so that would have to be replaced if I go without a sump. I'd love LEDs, haven't looked into them too much yet. Certainly will...

Possibilities of a 30 Gallon Reef

Hello all. I'm trying to figure out what my next step is in this hobby. I used to have a 55 gallon tank, but about a year ago it broke, and my pair of clown fish have been living in a ten gallon tank. I'm currently a college student and therefore limited financially and space wise, so I was...

    Lionfish Questions/Aggressive Tank Questions

I'm not sure I want other lionfish (although a pair or trio might be cool) or waspfish/scorps, but I might look into the filefish. Excellant articles. How do you move a lionfish? Can you use a net?

    Lionfish Questions/Aggressive Tank Questions

This would be my first lionfish. Fuzzy dwarf is fine by me. As far as weaning them off live foods goes, that would certainly be my plan. What kinds of live foods are acceptable to feed initially? I'll read those articles, thanks. I figured that's what the answer would be concerning the...

    Lionfish Questions/Aggressive Tank Questions

Hello, all. I am currently in the planning phase of a 75 gallon tank, and am entertaining the possibility of keeping aggressive/predatory type fish. First of all, a few questions concerning lionfish. How easy are they to keep? What kind of care requirements do they have? I'd be looking at...

Where do you put your GAC?

I'd be curious to see how many people use carbon and when. I've never used it other than in my QT.

    75 gal reef tank

You'd be happy with a sump. With a sump the only equipment in the tank are the powerheads and overflow. Plus you can build the refugium with into it. Another piece of equipment you might want to add is a protein skimmer. Just make sure you get a good one, I have the Reef Octopus skimmer and...

    Stand Build

Yup, I'm using a router on this one. With the 75 stand I'll use trim. That'll be the "fancy" stand. First I need to do the wood work in the basement so it all matches.

Yup, I think I'm good with all that. :) I'll keep you posted as I start building (hopefully next week). Thanks.

    Removing Bioballs and Adding Refugium

Do you have live rock in the tank? If so you may be fine removing all the bioballs at once since your live rock will provide plenty of biological filtration. Let someone else back me up on this one before you do it though.

    Stand Build

Ah, I gotcha. The way you used the 1x4 eliminates the need for plywood over the stand. I like it. I also had the front and back switched so I had two doors in the front instead. Simply a personal choice (more symmetrical). So I'd miter the top and bottom 1x4s and use pocket screws for those to...
