    retrofits for canopy

Definately don't install a MH less than 6 inches from water. Most recommend at least 10 inches of clearance. That would be a great light for a 29G, but your going to have to get a new canopy. Some MH bulbs produce UV rays at a much higher rate than natural sunlight. The individual bulb...

    Another crazy Cap'n Pete idea

Krux, Very interesting information, I did not know glass contracted and expanded due to temperature. I always thought oil from your finger caused the bulb to become hotter in that spot and that's what made it blow. I guess in essence it makes sense. A search on the subject nets some interesting...

    Another crazy Cap'n Pete idea

Has anyone ever painted the top of a PC bulb with chrome paint? Much like URI VHO bulbs, it would serve as an internal reflector, forcing all light to the bottom of the tube with no loss of light from the top. I have put aluminum foil on NO flourescents before with no problem. My concern with...

Overflow plans - am I on the right track?

Looks good. I just kept seeing my reply and never reopened it to see you edited your post. As long as the u-tube in the inner box is below the level of the divider you will be good to go. The lower you can get the divider without going under the u-tube level the better. (more gph)

Where can I get new bulkhead fittings?

A friend just bought a 3/4" bulkhead for $6 at Tractor Supply. Don't know if you have those but try a farm supply store.

    Anyone with B-Ionic exp.

Anyone use B-Ionic? For those who don't know what it is, it's a two part liquid calcium/buffer additive. First part raises and maintains alkalinity and second is a calcium additive. My wife's cousin uses and swears by it. He just bought a pH probe and the pH was at 8.0. He added the B-Ionic and...

    refugium overflow question

You can not control the flow from a straight siphon, and therefore will end up with a flood. An overflow can only take water that it is given, so there is no trying to get flows "just right". If you don't want to do an overflow, you could do a gravity fed refugium.

Alright Pyro.... alright, but I swear to God this is the last one. I just don't have the time to make anymore. Not to mention my other hobby business is getting orders now too. Email me.

    SWCD Squid

update The company that makes it 3iQVentures.com can not be found online. Unknown whether they are just having server problems or what. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy though. Apperantly the device cuts flow by 20%, a pretty big cut. That would mean on my 29G I would only be getting 400gph instaed...

    SWCD Squid

Has anyone heard about or even used the new SCWD (Switching Current Water Director) pronounced "Squid"? Came across it online. A web search pulls up a personal site of someone who has installed one on a Mag7 and seems to like it so far. Basically a t-valve that switches flow from one side to the...

    Hows this for a sump?

From your description your pumping about 1000 gph through the sump. That may be too much flow for a refugium, most people push about 100 gph through their fuges. As far as going skimmerless, many people have and have had great success. I would say if you are not getting a lot of skimmate go ahead.

    VHO vs PC

Bulb cost yes, PC's are more. However the only good ballasts I could ever find made the whole lighting setup a lot more than going with PC's, even in the long run. Now if you had say a Icecap ballast and wanted to decide what you wanted to use, if space is not an issue I would probably pick VHO...

Trying a friends digital camera out!

I would keep the cone on but drill several 3/16" holes in it. This will keep anything from being sucked onto it and not being able to get off. The screen alone is still capable of getting a fish stuck on it (believe me, it's happened to me). of course some critters can still get hurt (anemones...
