    DIY Moonlighting

Here's my new moonlighting. Cost me under $7.00! It's an auto accessory I found at Walgreens. Called "Mood Lighting" by Custom Accessories, Inc., plugs into 12V DC. They also had little spotlight types. Both are blue LED and very bright at 12V, I have them on 9V (spare adapter I had laying...

    kids and tanks

Child locks are a very good idea, as well as GFCI (for adults too). I did a quick search on child fatalities from tipping over aquariums and found nothing... I can't say the same for entertainment centers, dressers, and other large furniture. I have a 2 and 4 year old and aside from the...

    hair algae

Hair algae loves two things (well three)... 1) Phosphates- do you test for these? You can still have phosphates despite using RO water 2) high nitrates- what are yours at? 3) old or inadequate lighting... how old is the lamp, may be time for a change fix these things and your cleanup crew should...

    400 watt MH

You say you want to be able to upgrade to a 150G, which you would need at least 2x400W (one bulb every 2 feet). There are dual 400W ballasts, but I am unsure if you can run them with only one bulb. Raising the bulb on a pendant may be feasable on a 29G. Still kinda overkill and a drain on the...

    Poll: magnetic or electronic ballasts

Pirate Bob, That's very subjective. Electronic ballasts are "better" because they run cooler, are more efficient, and extend lamp life. They are also a lot more expensive. Depending on what bulb you are looking to run, a magnetic ballast might be just fine. As with everything else, quality...

    Second Yellow Tang DEAD!!!

Just to add my .02... a healthy tank has 0.0 ammonia and nitrites, and low nitrates. Your tank is obviously cycling again (it probably wasn't finished). Don't add anything until you have 0.0 ammonia and nitrites and it's been that way for a few weeks. As far as the grouper, I believe all...

how do you frag a star polyp?

The "old cut it off and epoxy it" does work. You cut an area of the mat and then peel it off. You then transplant where you want. I just laid mine on LR with light flow and the soon attached and started spreading. HTH

Deep Sand Beds Are They Worth It???

The problem with mixing is this: A deep sand bed relys on small grain size for two things... 1)smaller grain size creates a much higher surface area in which bacteria may colonize 2)even grain texture allows the bed to be somewhat compact, allowing for the anaerobic area deep in the bed (this is...

    coral beauty???

I personally think coral beauty's are one of the less likely of the dwarf angels to pick at coral. I've always had Fiji beauty's and never had a problem. You may have more of a problem with clams than with coral.

    Painting Back of Tank?

Absolutely, just buy some acrylic hobby paint and paint it on with a small sponge roller of a paint brush. No fumes. On acrylic, it will be a little more permanent than on glass, so make sure you put on a color you are willing to live with.

Are blue mushrooms rare or just hard to find??? Or is it just me?

And this is the same bunch when I used the nice yellow flash on my digi. As you can see, the brighter lighting caused them to go to a deep blue and you can see the blue pigmentation. They are very small now compared to the first picture. My reds also don't like the brighter light.

These are the same mushrooms under medium lighting. 2x65W PC's (1x10,00K, 1xUltra Actinic).

Are blue mushrooms rare or just hard to find??? Or is it just me?

Blue mushrooms look differently according to lighting used. The most common look is a purple, which occurs in low lighting (which they prefer). This is a pic took with 1 55W smartlite PC.
